connor wrote:My father was GC. My mother was English. I was born, raised and educated in the UK. Now I choose to live in Cyprus. Am lucky I s'pose because I hold dual nationality both English and Cypriot. When asked what I am...I simply say Cypriot.

Why can't more of you say that..?

Drop the GC and the TC titles folks..!

History is history...it happened...can't change it can you.

As I see it if you all cling to these GC/TC titles the Cyprus problem will never be solved. Cyprus is a country which physically stands on its own...its an island. The people living on this island..regardless of their racial origins should regard themselves as Cypriots.

After the 2nd world war a phrase was commonly used in the UK..."Forgive but don't forget." It referred of course to the attrocities carried out by the respective enemies of the time. Is it not possible for that simple phrase to be adopted by all and sundry here in Cyprus and to henceforth build on that...?

Yesterday my wife and I went for a walk round our village and we came across the remains of a small Turkish cemetry. Its in a terrible state. Headstones smashed etc etc. Ok I can understand that feelings were running high at the time and in a way can see why it was treated so badly. Tempers were flaming.

Am going to suggest to our village council members, all Greeks I believe, that this cemetry be renovated and made to look presentable again as a sign of respect to those buried there. Am told that Greek cemetries north of Nicosia have been badly treated as well. If both sides could start to make gestures like this....who knows where it might lead.

The foregoing suggestion may seem a little naive to some and perhaps even simple in its form...but its generally reckoned that the best inventions are the simple ones.

Come on people its been 34 years....time to get our acts together and start treating each other as human beings and bring the slanging matches to a halt. Mistakes were made on both sides, as far as I can see.

Am going to suggest to our village council that the renovation of that cemetry be carried out by volunteers drawn from the local community. Wish me luck...!

Nice post Connor. Dont press too hard on the issue. It would be a sensitive matter as half the GCs in Kato Anglissidhes and I share the same Turkish great-grandparents. Some do not deny this but others married in to GC families d not talk about it.

On my visit, that day we met, I avoided the cemetery as I knew of its state. Would have been to distressing; like GC cemeteries in the North, I dare say.

What is Heartbreaking is how some so called "Cypriots" fail to express their respect to this man and others like him.

The real "True Cypriots" will never disrespect such a man.

I find it disgusting how individuals that call themselves "Cypriots" do not recognise his sacrifice.

When Evagoras was murdered by the British, we also lost someone who was destined as a literary great. He was not just a hero, but he was also an artist.

My apologies Bir for calling TCs traitors to their country.

I apologise because this is in fact completely untrue.

TCs are not traitors to their country. They have always proven themselves to be loyal to Turkey, so off course they can not be traitors to their country.

They have proven their loyalty to Turkey on several occasions, such as:
1) Forming TMT and being the first to commit inter communal violence against the GCs,
2) Withdrawing from government in 1963 and promoting TAKSIM,
3) Aiding and abetting the Turkish Invasion and occupation.

The only individuals that can be labelled traitors, are EOKA B and those involved in the Greek Coup against Makarios. TCs do not qualify as traitors to Cyprus I am afraid!

The rest of your post above is truly appreciated and respected. I appreciate the fact that you recognise that GCs suffered and the hands of the Turks, and that you also express sympathy.

Also note, that "racist" is another label used a little too loosely on this forum. I believe that only 1 member is deserving of this label, and he is not a GC or TC. I think most of you will know who I am referring to.

Sarcasm, they say,is the lowest form of wit....
Congratulations, countryman, for I am a paphidis as well...My alligence is to Cyprus above all else...I agree that we often too easily throw around the word racist...That does not mean there are no racists on this Forum...I can think of more than one,but we won't go there...Suffice to say I don't think you are a racist...You are just brainwashed like most of our compatriots...You owe it to yourself to look at our sad history objectively, and see if you can find some fault with your side as well...That would be a good start... 8)

Have a another read of my previous posts, and you will see that I have admitted to some faults from the GC side.

I consider my approach to be objective. The facts still remain. The TCs have never united with their GC brothers. The TCs have always worked to undermine the GCs, from the 1950s and to the present day.

What's all about read bayrak news.
TALAT AND CHRISTOFIAS CAME TOGETHER AT AN EVENT ORGANIZED BY YOUTH BRANCHES OF POLITICAL PARTIES

The two leaders met at a special event organized by youth branches of Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political parties which have been attending round table meeting organized by the Slovakian Embassy.

Talat and Christofias were welcomed with slogans in support of peace at last night’s event at the Ledra Palace, which was also attended by leaders and representatives of political parties as well as youths.

In an address at the event, Talat pointed to the need for a solution in Cyprus and said that the youth is in support of a federal united Cyprus, which he said, is a joint objective for him and Mr Christofias.

Underling the need for the two sides to carry out serious work, the Talat said `we need encouragement and the support of the people, especially the youth, for reconciliation`, warning that lack of support will make the negotiations more difficult.

`I promise to do my best and to reconcile to prepare a prosperous future for the youth` he said.

For his part, Greek Cypriot Leader Christofias also voiced the need for peace in Cyprus and promised to do his best to find a common language needed and to reunify the island with the help of the United Nations.

Christofias voiced the hope that a similar event will be organized next year, this time, in a United Federal Cyprus.

The United Nations Secretary Genetal’s Special Representative for Cyprus – Chief of Mission Taye Brook Zerihoun also delivered a speech during the event.

He said that arts have a liberating influence on people and that it also brings people together.

He noted that there is a window of opportunity to achieve the objective of a United Cyprus.

The Slovakian Ambassador Anna Tournikova, for her part, explained that the idea of organizing such an event was put forward at round table meetings attended by Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot political parties.

The event, `titled Songs for Peace`, continued with a concert by Bi-communal Chorus for Peace which performed Turkish and Greek songs.

A Performance by the Bi-communal Folk Dance Group for Peace marked the end of the event.

I have always wondered why President Christofias alway wears the same red tie. He needs to vary it a little. I wonder if Turkish Cypriot Leader Talat also wears the same tie over and over again? :?

I might send him a green and blue tie, so it does not appear that he is always wearing the same one. :?
