Muslims suppressing atheism in Turkey

by Kelly O'Connor Page 1 of 2 page(s)

www.opednews.com

Yesterday, I blogged about Muslims attempting to take down pictures of their invisible friend on Wikipedia via petition. Today we got a letter from the head of the number one Turkish atheist site which has been removed by the Turkish government twice. Once under the original domain and again under another domain. Unfortunately, the owner is unable to fight this in court because to do so, he would have to identify himself which, if you're familiar, will end up resulting in his head being chopped off by the peaceful and loving Muslims who work for Allah. If you speak Turkish and you are an atheist please support this site...

Creationists control Internet access in Turkey

Ateizm.org , the most prominent non-profit Turkish web site on atheism and religions was closed for the second time in December 2007, under orders from a Turkish court. Ateizm.org was established in 2000 by three young Turkish atheists who devoted themselves to the enlightenment of Turkish people. Ateizm.org hosts an online discussion board named Ateistforum ( forum.ateizm.org), one of the busiest forums for the Turkish speaking online community over the Internet. Ateizm.org received 1000 visits a day at its peak when it was open.

WOW! They are fighting so much on that site all over the world.......How did you manage to find just that one article??? Did they read the charges against the site....... :?

The crackpot was jailed ... so why are some scientific/atheism debating fora inaccessible from Turkey?

Reuters wrote:Turkish Islamic author given 3-year jail sentence

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Controversial Turkish Islamic author Adnan Oktar was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday for creating an illegal organization for personal gain, state-run Anatolian news agency said.

A spokeswoman for his Science Research Foundation (BAV) confirmed to Reuters that Oktar had been sentenced but said the judge was influenced by political and religious pressure groups.

Oktar had been tried with 17 other defendants in an Istanbul court. The verdict and sentence came after a previous trial that began in 2000 after Oktar, along with 50 members of his foundation, was arrested in 1999.

In that court case, Oktar had been charged with using threats for personal benefit and creating an organization with the intent to commit a crime. The charges were dropped but another court picked them up resulting in the latest case.

Internet bans pit Turkey against freedom of speech

There are currently 853 Web sites banned in Turkey, including video-sharing site YouTube and dailymotion.com, placing Turkey in the league of countries such as China and Saudi Arabia, famous for restricting freedom of speech.

Web sites are most often banned on grounds that they insult the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, contain vulgarity, enable gambling or promote suicide. Many sites have also been banned for crimes covered under the Internet Security Law. But a number of sites are banned for no apparent reason. The latest Web site to be banned was gundemonline.com, which was blocked by Ankara’s 11th High Criminal Court without any justification.
Other countries known to frequently ban Web sites include China, Iran, Armenia, Tunisia, Indonesia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Sites protest bans

A campaign has been initiated by elmaaltshift.com to protest these bans. To date 441 Web sites -- including some of the most popular sites in the country, such as online English-Turkish dictionary zargan.com, sinema.com and forzabesiktas.com -- are supporting the campaign.

Earlier this week the sites supporting the campaign “banned” themselves by putting up front pages that read “Access is denied,” in imitation of what happens when sites are blocked by courts.

Hey! Look what happened in Greece a while back!!!!!!

Rate this article :
As a result of a goverment measures in Greece againts illegal gambling, the greek goverment, having in mind that every computer game can be converted into a illegal gambling game, has forbitten the installation of EVERY Electronic Game in Greece.

To be more specific, if you play or install Computer Games, Cellphone Games or even consol Games like Gameboy/xbox/playstation you can get arrested, go to jail and even pay a large amount of money (About 1.000 euro). To achive that, she banned all kind of games in the Internet Cafs. The first 3 paragraphs of the new Law are the following:
LAW NUMBER 3037 - 30 July 2002
GAMING PROHIBITION
The President of Greek Republic
We issue the following law which was voted by the Greek Parliament
---------------------
Article 1
Game categories
---------------------
According to notion of the commands of the current law:
a. Mechanical games are those, that depend on one's muscle force.
b. Electrical games are those, that depend on electrical mechanisms.
c. Electromechanical games are those that depend on electrical mechanisms and the use of one's muscle force.
d. Electronic games are those, that depend on both electrical-electronic mechanisms and software.
e. Entertainment technical games are those, whose result depends exclusively on the ability and skill of the
player, and are used solely for entertainment.
The category (e) also includes all card games which had been characterised as
"technical" games, according to the statement of law F.E.K A21.

----------------------------------------------
Article 2
Game prohibition
----------------------------------------------
1. Operation and installation of any game of type (b), (c) and (d) of article 1, including computer games,
placed in public places such as hotels, cafeterias, organization halls and in any other public or private
place, is prohibited.
2. Operation of games of type (e) is allowed in devices of type (a). Regarding these games, it is prohibited to place bets.
Such bets will attract penalties described in Articles 4 and 5.

-------------------------
article 3
Internet cafs
--------------------------
The prohibition of using computers described in article 2 does not affect internet cafs, as long as the computers
are not used for any gaming activities.
To be able to run an Internet cafe, a special permit is required from the municipal or the state where the
company is based) and from its starting point (port) if it is a boat based company. According to the first
application of this measure, the company should be equipped with this permit in three months
from the issue date of this law.
---------------------------------
As you have read the above law, only one think can come in your mind. Are they crazy. Allready the greek police has arrested 2 owners of internet cafs, but the were found NOT guilty from the Law court of Thessaloniki. The court also decided that the law is Not-Republic . After that, everybodys expectation was that the Greek Parliament would re-consider of the law and cancel it. But NO. Not only the law is still active, but the Police has in progress larger - range activities. The internet - cafs owenrs group has decided to take legal actions against all the PUBLIC SERVICES that are using computers. Cause any pre-installed Microsoft Windows Based PC, has pre-installed computer
games like solitaire...
Also a funny thing happened. Microsoft offers a trip to a lucky US gamer to Greece. She also offers a cash prize of about $800. Its about the money you'll have to pay if youy get arrested. She also offers you hotel rooms but it is most likely as she says, not to be able to use the room as a result of being arrested. Interesed? Visit http://www.microsoft.com/games/ageofmyt ... stakes.asp
Now that you have read all the above. Do you think that something is wrong? Do you thing that Greece has gone MAD? If yes, protest about this law! Visit the online protest at http://www.netcafes.gr
I think it is the right time for our voice to be heard. To your voice to be heard... GREECE HAS GONE GAMIN' MAD!!!!

Just pointing out how stupid countries can be sometimes. The case was thrown out of court in the end.

More disturbing is the ban on Turkish organisations in Greece that stops them using the word Turkish in their title. They can be Greek Muslims but not Turkish........

What do you want them to be called Greek-Turks? :?

Anyway we are not discussing Greece as that is just another EU fellow member country ... but Turkey is the enemy invader and hence of more interest to Cyprus Forum ...

But here, wise up on all the fantastic privileges they enjoy, none reciprocated to any of the Greek minorities in Turkey ...

Great! as long as you do not want to know who you are. Like African Americans......British Indians. British Greeks. British Turks.

It is the way of Greeks to try to wipe out all other nationalities and claim there inventions and prowess as their own. Not ever happy to share.
