It may not particularly interest you, but what puzzles me is the legal basis for selling Greek Cypriot owned property, even under TRNC law.

According to article 159 of the TRNC constitution, three categories of immovable property were nationalised. Greek Cypriot owned property falls under class (b) in that article, i.e. "property abandoned by its owners". The constitution states that nationalised property in classes (a) and (c) may not be sold, and that in class (b) may only be sold if a specific law is enacted to permit this. Greek Cypriot owned immovable property was allocated to refugees from the south on an "equal value" basis, but they were granted possession and not ownership of such immovable property. The law concerning the allocation of "equal value" property even stipulates that such land may not be divided into parcels. How is it that private estate agents are able to advertise villas built on Greek Cypriot land that has been divided into parcels for this purpose? Surely the state was the sole owner of all such land, and in the absence of a specific law permitting the sale of this land, I do not understand how title to it has passed from state ownership into the hands of these developers. The law passed a few years ago concerning property acquisition by foreigners makes no reference to immovable property that falls within class (b) in the above-mentioned article of the constitution. There seems to be a missing link in the chain here.

I can't help feeling that even people like the Orams, who say that they recogise the TRNC and abide by its laws, are in a far weaker position than they think.

I am going by the 1975 map of Cyprus prepared by the Department of Lands and Surveys on which all villages are colour coded according to the ethnic origin of their inhabitants based on the 1960 census, and Agios Amvrosios is shown in blue, indicating "Purely Greek" as defined in the key.

You may be better informed than me.

I know the area, and sadly it would be unrecognisable to many. You can hardly glimpse the sea anymore in some areas, its a real concrete jungle...............

Same here. Agios Athanasios was once a small, independent village. Now it has been swallowed up by the Limassol urban sprawl and construction work is going on left right and centre.
