Security Council lauds launch of negotiations in reunifying Cyprus
The Security Council today warmly welcomed the launch of full-fledged negotiations between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, aimed at the reunification of the island.

In a presidential statement the 15-member body praised the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat for advancing discussions since their first meeting on 21 March.

“The Security Council calls on both sides to continue to work together in a constructive and positive manner in order to reach a comprehensive and durable settlement,” said Ambassador Michel Kafando of Burkina Faso, which holds the rotating Council presidency this month.

“The Security Council looks forward to progress in the negotiations and reiterates its readiness to support the process,” he added.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon`s recent appointment of Alexander Downer as his Special Adviser on Cyprus was also warmly received by the Security Council.

Today`s presidential statement echoes Mr. Ban`s message yesterday to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders in which he commended them “for their seriousness of purpose, sense of compromise and commitment to seeing the peace process through to a successful conclusion.”

halil, tell us, why is it you only quote the UN when it just suits your needs? In case you haven't realised, but the UN has ordered Turkey to leave Cyprus, remove its troops and return to the RoC total juristiction of the WHOLE island.

perhaps you like to conveniently forget about the UN resolutions against you, but just like to spout the fact that the UN this and the UN that rubbish.

Please you must think the GCs are fools, we can see through your brain washing propoganda crap. I tell you what, how about Turkey obeys all UN resolutions (I won't even ask about the ECHR CoE) and we accept the UNs call for reunification talks?

Can you do that? Can you abide by any laws, perhaps not, didn't think so. therefore your posts are meaningless.

Have a nice ******* (in Deniz code format) day.

Pantheman ... ignore the propaganda parrot!

The UN may be seeing/meeting them as Leaders of the two communities in which case President Christofias is the Leader of the GC community (and Maronites, Armenians etc) and Talat is the leader of the retrograde Turk-"TC"-Anatolian occupiers.

They are not seeing him in his Presidential capacity. If they were he would have been referred to as President Christofias and Talat still as Leader.

Diplomacy

....... anyway it's high time the EU played more of an active role.

Would a better word be duplicity? The United Nations has numerous cases of member states not heeding UN decisions. Cyprus is merely one example of that, so the UN really does not talk much from a position of strength. Economic and Security geopolitics is the master here (and elsewhere), and when the double-dealing of realpolitik is added to the mixture, that makes for a rather high wall for the idealists on both sides to breach.

So do you think that the EU should bulldoze its way through TC hearts?? Do you really think they can be unbiased now??? Why do you think the GCs are so keen to have it this way???
