Standing in Turkey's way

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

There are some people in the U.K. who reckon that in the event of Turkey joining the E.U.,then the U.K. should withdraw from the E.U. to regain its independence.

It isn't only France & Germany that would veto Turkey's application for E.U. membership, but Cyprus would as well.

Thats interesting, where did you hear that? With pound sinking and recession looming I think that would be suicidal.

"they do however then need to make further concessions to Greece re the Aegaen to get their support"

You are not getting the essentials of EU entry. It is not a matter of negotiations and achieving a better deal for a candidate state. You either accept the rules and meet the standards or you do not. Some of the rules just happen to favor Greece in the Aegean. It is not a matter of concessions. To enter the EU you accept the peaceful resolution of disputes in the ICJ which applies international agreements and that gives Greece 12 miles, as Turkey has in the Black Sea and the south, and continental shelf for each island.

By the same token Turkey becomes the nation with the highest number of Euro deputies and EU commissioners. Is that a concession by the other 27 EU members?

The problem is that Turkey is not willing to accept the principle that the rules have absolute application to all member states. The bazaar mentality is still uppermost.

I think tess is worried that if the UK leaves the EU ... she and the other Brits living in GC owned homes are going to be up the creek even more and may be viewed as "Enemy/foreigners" by their own (ex) country!

The UK is never at ease in the EU. The British are not Europeans, they never were.

The best thing is for Britain, Turkey and Israel to make an application to join the USA. It would be funny to see how the "negotiations" for such a union would be handled by the Americans who are always pushing the EU to give special treatment to Turkey.

What for ? Already both Britain and Turkey are ruled by the USA, whereas as far as Israel is concerned, it is Israel that controls the USA as Ariel Sharon has bluntly noted it.
In a way, I appreciate Israel as it is the only country in the world who doesn't give a damn about what the other say and do while at the same being the only true democracy in the Middle East.

Cem,
You are a dickhead! Great Britain is not ruled by America, even though the British Government is very staunchly pro-American.

As for Israel being a democracy, that's a load of crap! Israel has an extremely long way to go before it can ever be reguarded as a genuine democratic state.

My Neanderthal pet gets scummy whenever there is a remark concerning either UK or Commonwhealt, his two kennels.

The British government has always been the USA's lapdog and will be that way, you moron.

Since Israel controls America, it amounts to the same ! Britts indirectly turn Israeli slaves and whose worthless lives became expendable during Iraq invasion.

BTW, how old are you, sunny boy? Still having pre-puberty problems ?

Behold the conquering and brave Commonwhealt army !
Sir Britt-Shit Aidan in front, followed by the lions of England coming to the rescue of Cyprus.
