Actually, to Alain's defence I must say the following things.
The French are known for pretty mediocre English (sorry Alain, no offence indented). So it's quite easy to misunderstand each other. Especially in written form in a forum.
He has a keen interest in 'Northern Cyprus'... could he just be interested in the northern parts (geographically speaking) because of its beauty? Could he just be interested in the historical events that led to Cyprus being divided into two parts, ie
why there is such a thing as the 'Northern Cyprus' to begin with. Perhaps he has no clue and wants to find out? Who do you turn to? Well, if you have no clue it's quite possible that you seek out a contact in 'Northern Cyprus'. Such a person should know best why their 'country' exists.
Not everybody is aware of why it's like it is. Some people simply believe there is two parts of Cyprus, one Greek and one Turkish... all legal and nice. It's not like they learn about the Cyprus problem in school all over the world, not even in Europe. Those who know the deal are those who invested time in finding out themselves one way or another.
He's learning Turkish... big deal. It's a language. It's always good to learn foreign languages. Kudos to him! Isn't the French known (sorry again Alain, no offence intended) to be quite obstinate when it comes to speak anything but French? If that's a fact rather than fiction I'd say that Alain is a good role model for French people in general. They ought to be more open minded towards foreign languages. Personally I think there are plenty of languages much more worth learning than Turkish (ie English, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin etc). But each to their own. If Alain found Turkish to be interesting it's his prerogative.
He wants a penfriend from 'Northern Cyprus'... he wants to know more about the beautiful country (for all we know he could mean Cyprus... all of Cyprus).
Maybe he's one of those who doesn't know that the 'TRNC' is a pseudo state formed illegally in 1983 and recognised only by Turkey? Maybe he has heard the story from a Turkish perspective only? I mean, there's no reason to be rude to him. Cut the Frenchie some slack will you?
One thing we must understand is that the 'TRNC' sort of exists. It's not legal, it's recognised only by Turkey and it will most likely never ever get international recognition. It may be built of papier-mâché but in the eyes of people unaware of the Cyprus problem it exists. Lots of people know of Cyprus as an island divided between Turkey and Greece, north and south. That's as far as their knowledge goes. That's actually how ignorant some of the visitors to Cyprus are. Then imagine what those that never even visited the island knows about the Cyprus problem... nada, zilch, nothing.
Just because someone is not aware of the Cyprus problem doesn't mean they're a bad person supporting an illegal regime and the occupying forces. Isn't it fair to assume that the person in question simply doesn't know any better? If it is. Then by all means, feel free to educate him... politely. Whether you're GC or TC, be proud that someone from another country is showing interest in Cyprus.
Cyprus may be the navel of the world. But the world does not revolve around it's navel. That's something we must understand. People from other countries with no deep connections to or interest in Cyprus can simply not be assumed to know everything about the situation on the island.
I think Alain's English made him prone to misunderstanding. But you failed to see that and instead you victimised him. Give a perfect stranger the benefit of a doubt before you decide to tar and feather him and run him out of town with your pitchforks next time... please?
I think it's safe to assume that Alain won't return.
