The British can pay up on their lease of Cypriot Territory or they will be issued with an eviction notice as soon as we finish dealing with the greedy non compromising Turks!

Paphitis,
The Akrotiri & Dhekelia Sovereign Base Areas are British colonies,so how can the Cypriot Government try to evict them? It's not logical.Think of the benefits to those who work in those 2 colonies.Forcing the British to give them up will do those workers out of employment.

Aidan.

1500 employees does not warrant holding 5-6% of the land of Cyprus. We'll add a new tax to pay them a salary and make them traffic wardens.

DT.,
The S.B.A.'s have never been under the constitutional jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus, therefore,to demand their handover from the British, especially without compensation,is unconstitutional.

DT thank you for your post I feel I am missing lots because the Cypro doesn't make news in the land down under. Sounds like we are not going to move forward. As halil said Talat is representing what the majority of TC's are wanting. I hope that our President represents what the majority of GC's want which is to live in a Cyprus for Cypriots where they can all return to their homes.

I guess that means things are to remain as they are for another 34 years, because I don't want a Cyprus where I am living in a separate State on the same Island where its is different to that of my brother and thats if am lucky enigh for th Turks to allow me to live where I want too because I speak a different language then they do.

Well said Humanist.

We are actually negotiating on introducing an Apartheid System to Cyprus! :?

I want nothing with this type of Cyprus.

Well, I think this piece pretty much describes Talat's role in the the north very accurately during these negotiations and his "leadership" role in general.!!

No worries humanist

Christofias said something very clever in his opening statement if you noticed. "Nothing shall be termed as agreed unless the whole thing is agreed."

Seems he's lost a little confidence and does not want the next initiative to be burdened with the concessions made now.

Our biggest mistake was making concessions and entering the negotiations process.

We should have stayed to the resolutions that came out right after the invasion and demand their implementation.

Of course that wouldn't solve the Cyprus problem, but the Cyprus problem can not be solved with negotiations either, unless we fully adopt the Turkish demands.

With negotiations all we achieve is to upgrade the TC community and make the Cyprus problem seem as if it is a problem of differences between two communities, and not a problem of one country invading and occupying another sovereign country. This is the reason why the Turks want us to negotiate with their puppets, instead directly with them.

Still no one can explain the difference between BBF and partition. To me at least it is not clear. But since there must be good faith in the negotiating process I will not be too cynical today.

The TC-Turkish demands of political equality and rotating presidency seem to have been satisfied, but as usual they have been changed as soon as they were accepted. Now we are hearing of presidential committees as well as a rotating presidency and the concept of virgin birth.

Above it all however is the view that no GC demand on territory or properties will be discussed unless the TC-Turkish demands are accepted.

To me this means that first they want to figure out how to rule the whole island and then they would be willing to hand back territory which they will co manage with Turkey as guarantor of the whole setup. In this co management we must accept the participation of naturalised settlers as MPs and ministers. And bear in mind that the territory to be returned is the dead zone in the ceasefire line. In short no territory is really returned.

Anyone still think that partition is a bad alternative? But where we are now we cannot even ask for partition. We are stuck in seeking a solution which will not cost too great a loss of what is left of Cyprus.

I'd be careful if I were you. You run the risk of being labelled a fascist by bananiot with this attitude.

It all depends on what version of "BBF" you are talking about. If you are talking about the Turkish version or the Annan plan, then there is not much difference. The only difference is that Turks not only would fully control the north, but they would also be able to control Cyprus as a whole as well.

But a BBF with the right content, which is the one we are willing to accept, is not partition.

The right content is:

1) Proportional land distribution 18%/82%.
2) Two Cypriot states, with exactly the same internal constidution and powers, equal to each other, with only difference that one state will have TC majority and the other a GC majority. No mention about Greek or Turkish.
3) The powers of the two states will be limited to some internal issues.
4) The central goverment, like in all federations, will be above the states and have authority over them for the important issues, and this goverment will be elected democratically by the Cypriot people as a whole.

If you see the system of the USA it is not much different from what I describe above.
