what about the national anthems and flags?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

what about the national anthems and flags?

For those of you that are pro unification, i would like to gauge your opinions on what should be done in relation to the national anthem and flag of a united cyprus. Should they use the ROC/Greek national anthem, should they use Istiklal Marsi?, should they develop a new one and if so which language should it be sung in?
And what about the flags, do we the the ROC's or TRNC's? i dont think either side will accept the others as the national flag.

Your thoughts??

The flag of Republic of Cyprus was designed by a Turkish Cypriot and has nothing Greek or Turkish in it but the shape of our island which should represent all Cypriots. Since any new arrangement will simply be continuation of the Republic of Cyprus the flag can and should remain the same.

The anthem can change to somehting newly composed, as long as it is somehting nice and professional, and anyone can sing it in whatever language he wants.

I would have to agree with Piratis.

There is no point in changing the RoC flag unless a better and more attractive flag is designed. It has nothing Greek or Turkish about it.

Some interesting facts about national anthem :
* Denmark has 2 national anthems
* Pakistan's anthem is not in Urdu or English (the official languages) or in anyone of its 72 provincial or regional languages but rather in Persian
* Switzerland's anthem has different lyrics for each of the country's four official languages (French, German, Italian and Romansh).
* Canada's national anthem has different lyrics for each of the country's official languages (English and French), and on some occasions is sung with a mixture of stanzas taken from its French and English versions
* South Africa's national anthem is unique in that five of the eleven official languages are used in the same anthem (each language comprising a stanza)
* Another multilingual country, Spain, has no words in its anthem

How about the new national anthem being in English only?

English could also be the main official language, which could also assist in veering away from Hellenic and Ottoman nationalism and adopting a Cypriot nationalism which is identifiable to all Cypriots. This will close the divide and chasm over time.

it wouldnt be too hard to adopt either as most cypriot kids are being taught english in schools on both sides.

Why not make it in Russian or Chinese then? Why not in Persian, like the Pakistanis?

Probably the best is what they have in Spain. No words at all.

even though i personally dont believe that a unified cyprus will work, i recently heard the south african national anthem before a rugby match and thought it sounded fantastic, it was unique and i couldnt understand alot of what was being sung by all the players, black and white sung it with passion...
