what about the national anthems and flags?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The new national anthem should adopt a very well known British tune since the Brits are really involved in all the political underhandedness which led to the problems in Cyprus in the first place.

The words should be changed [of the well known song which is sung to the above mentioned tune] and I would suggest the following;-

"Knees up Greek and Turk

let's make these talks work,

arm in arm we can venture forth

Greeks in the south and Turks in the north,

anyone who doesn't like it

can go and have a "Jerk"

It'll always be the same, that's the name of the game SO,

knees up Greek and Turk !!".

Our Ernie has been out on the piss again !!.

The anthem does need to be unique. Neither Greek or Turkish. Cyprus using the Greek National anthem for all these years was a bad mistake IMHO. I'm not saying that Greek Cypriots should not discard their anthem. After all, the Greek Community here in Victoria proudly sing it. Yet for a country that either side fears will be absorbed into another, the Greek Cypriot side using the Greek anthem really was not a politic move. And the Turkish north using the Turkish National anthem was just as tactless. If Cyprus is truly independent, then let there be a truly independent anthem.

We just need an EU Anthem which would serve all the EU member states ...

I propose the Greek National anthem

It says it all ... 8)

Turks stay away! :D

I hope you are joking, Oracle. The Greek National Anthem is for Greece. As for the other EU countries, I think they will want to retain their own anthems... In any case, Beethoven's 'Ode To Joy' is the anthem of the EU. You think Greece would want to replace their anthem with that? Unlikely, I think...

The national anthem should be in english not greek or turkish, that much is clear. As for its lyrics I propose the following :

National Anthem

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

I think that the "song of liberty" has many poignant words that suit Cyprus:

Stand beside me for peace and for liberty
For freedom denied to many Nations
With sad emotions, for borders that run through this land
With the hope that with justice and peace all will be free

He spoke of the need for a territorial adjustment because (quoting as best I can from memory) "the Turks are currently sitting on more territory than they deserve."

Tim, that must be the biggest discovery of the century; considering that Turkey now occupies almost 36% of Cyprus, while the TC community used to number only about 18.4% (some say it is even less now) of the total Cypriot population, and were the legal owners of only 17% of the total PRIVATE properties (or 12.3% of the total area of Cyprus.)

I am not suggesting that it is a big discovery; I am suggesting that it is significant that Lord Hannay, whom I believe to be one of the real architects behind the scenes of the new settlement, raised this point in a radio interview - in fact, the only substantive point he made. This implies that something along these lines is on the cards.

Thanks for the link. I was trying to quote verbatim from memory with mixed results.
