Who is/was the World's greatest writer?

Postby Svetlana » Sun Aug 31, 2008 11:08 am

OK, I never understood Shakespeare? Dickens, I imagine was very good - his novels are almost a history lesson for the England of his time.

For me, it is E M Forster, even though he only wrote 5 novels. He once said that he could only write about three types of people: people like himself, people he would like to be and people that irritate him. He compared himself unfavourably with Tolstoy who could could create any type of character.

For me it has to be Solzhenitsyn

'A day in the life of Ivan Denisovitch' (excuse spelling)

And 'The Gulag Archepeligo'

Also Pushkin

Primo Levi, maybe not world renowned but acclaimed by people who have suffered at the hands of tyrany.

I think the answer, to this question, Lana, depends on the genre. Some writers wrote only fiction, others only poetry, yet others drama only. Across these genres, Shakespeare was the one who most prolifically and passionately crafted literature that withstands time, so in my opinion, he's the greatest.

At the very least Shakespeare was a plagiarist.

Projections on his popularity and withstanding over time, suggest he is not a shadow on the Greek dramatists.
