Koşaner, Keçiören and the You Tube ban Saturday, August 30, 2008
After naked photographs of the founder of Turkey, Atatürk, were broadcast on “youtube”, access to the site was banned by Turkish officials.
This nonsense youtube ban made us prime time news of international television channels and now millions watch these naked pictures.
Turkish officials bringing the ban on you tube are having a hard time catching up with the century.
On the other hand newly appointed Land Force Commander, Gen. Işık Koşaner, in an address sends signals of another set of wrongs.
He says it is the Turkish Armed Forces', or TSK, duty to protect the “nation state, unitary state and laic state”.
He is mistaken because the four pillars of the Republic are democracy, laicism, the legal state and social state. The 2nd Article in the Constitution cites that no power, including TSK, cannot weigh one of these four pillars and classify them under the secondary elements of the republic.
If the “nation-unitary-laic” state is not based on democracy and state of law, there comes dictatorship.
A completly opposite view to Koşaner came from Keçiören Mayor Turgut Altınok. The owner of a grocery store was beaten for selling alcohol and the scenes were broadcast very clearly on the Internet.
Altınok defends that this is a set up and alcoholic beverages cannot be sold in grocery stores, although he condemns the beating.
What an unfortunate statement to hear from an official electedTurkey will someday overcome this youtube ban, the TSK top officials will brief only about military issues, young girls wearing headscarf will attend universities freely and in the facilities run by Istanbul Municipality alcohol will be sold.
We don't want too much, do we?
