I know it as:- "Sure they're handing out life sentences, for the wearing of the green"

I think there was some dispute about the original version since the law was slackened off a bit.

Well, it was a bit ridiculous to hang a man because he chose to wear a green hat, a life sentence was far more appropriate don't you think ?.

And they call the Irish stupid !!.

And now I will tell you of the beatings I took merely because I would not [in some cases could not, which suited me better] name names and supply information which would be of detriment to those enquired of.

I, as an innocent man, was incarcerated in a famous jail [I will not name] and was there subjected to inhuman treatment, all the more inhuman due to my innocence.

The reason for my being held captive was quite simply the result of my being unwilling to divulge information which would incriminate others, it's as simple as that.

I do not propose to describe in detail the manner in which I was treated, I am sure there is enough evidence of mistreatment of prisoners by the British Government forces already under discussion without my adding to it.

Suffice to say that I was held in solitary confinement, given only bread and water for the maximum time allowed under British law at that time and deprived of communication with the outside world.

I think the idea was to break my spirit !!, Lord God above, I was a person used to the harshness of ill-treatment for the greater part of my life, I had been trained by the very authorities who now sought to break me , to withstand their abuse and cruelty, I could remain silent [which I did since I was also used to that] and actually laugh [inwardly of course] at the attempts made to glean information and force me to conform.

God Bless your memory again Donal O'Hara, you taught me so well, all I had to do was act like an idiot and the fools thought I WAS one.

When brutality failed, diplomacy was substituted for it, the smarmy little bastard who came slithering into my cell with his offers of leniency if I conformed made me sick, the skittering little whelp, if HE was an example of what the British use to act as ambassadors to their enemies, then it is small wonder that the civilized world is now taking the piss out of their efforts to establish themselves as a power on the earth.

And those sadistic bastards that undertake the filthy work of the prison authorities, do not disgrace yourself by calling yourself MEN, you are not even fit to call yourselves DOGS. [although of course you are trained like them].

And you brave soldiers, you who outnumber your enemies to such a degree that a fair fight is an impossibility, you who consider it your duty to march forth, head up jacksie and into the fray, God help you too, you have less intelligence than a snail [at least it withdraws into it's shell when confronted by danger] but Oh!, how to be a hero by such action ?, easy, tell your Master to do his own fighting, you have not engaged in a just cause for decades.

Ruled by corruption, corrupted by rulers, you are truly in a sorry state, you should take a leaf out of the Tinker's book, er, sorry, most have no time for reading, they prefer to THINK about what they do God Bless them all.

And I bid all those affected by the truth in my words, a soldier's farewell......Ernie.
