Looks like Russia is poised to recognize the UDI's of the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkazia and South Ossetia, judging from the unaminously approved resolution voted upon by the Russian Parliament. If Russia does so, is this going to impact the situation in Cyprus? The north has tried to get their Unilateral Declaration of Independence recognized since 1983. Thus far, only Turkey has acknowledged it.
Now the question is whether the north's silent allies (and there are a few within the OIC) will use Russian recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as justification for coming out in open support of the north. Recognition of the north as a sovereign nation by other countries will effectively kill any chances of reunification, so the decision of the Russian President to decide whether or not to heed the resolution of his parliament could well spell disaster for Cyprus.
