South Ossetia and Abkazia

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby utu » Tue Aug 26, 2008 10:01 pm

The next few days will be decisive, I think. Who will follow Russia's lead in recognition for South Ossetia and Abkhazia (besides the South Ossetians and Abkhazians recognizing each other, of course)? If a number of nations do so, then the north of Cyprus is going to gain politically.

Russia has demonstrated how swiftly and effectively it can restore sovereignty to invaded countries which house some of its Nationals.

It does not matter to whom you were replying Oracle. Only an idiot could have written the above. Abkhazia and Ossetia are not sovereign countries but parts of a sovereign country called Georgia. What Russia did is not much different to what Turkey did in Cyprus in 1974.

By the way, has anyone seen a response from the Cyprus government? Normally a response to an imperialist invasion comes seconds after the invasion. What are we waiting for? Did Christofias swallow his tongue?

Bananiot,

You are not suggesting that the "trnc" as a "state" was part of Cyprus territory before Turkey invaded in 1974 to give it's independence are you, because that is the only way you can draw parallels in your argument, otherwise what you wrote is not correct.!

When Obama becomes President and I become the Pope then we can add the vatican as one of our staunch supporters !!

Miltiades became pope after the Roman emperor Galerius had passed an edict of toleration ending the persecution of Greek Cypriots !

Come again Kikapu? Why do you want me to state the obvious? There are many parallels that can be drawn, even with the invasion of Greece of Asia Minor in 1919. And, of course it is not exactly the same as Cyprus, it could never be.

For this situation to have any similarities to Cyprus, Turkey would have to re-invade Cyprus and they will get their butts licked by Russia for being the US-backed Georgian equivalent.

The "TRNC" is not recognised other than as an occupied region of Cyprus! So it is nothing like Ossetia & Abkhazia.

What do you want to wager that Obama will be the next President? Personally I would love to see you dressed as the Pope

Um... Oracle, I do beg to differ. Ossetia and Abkazia is THUS FAR recognized by all nations except Russia as occupied regions of Georgia. If other countries follow Russia's lead in recognition, then the silent supporters of TRNC (Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Gambia, Paraguay for starters) are going to become more overt. If reunification talks fail - OR ARE SEEN TO FAIL - by these states, they may use the example shown by Russia as an excuse to recognize the north. Granted, this is an extreme scenario, but Pandora's box is now open, and this scenario is not an impossible one...

Turkey will have its butt licked by Russia???
Oracle, are you still waiting for other nations to fight your fights for you?? You have no understanding of Russia's foreign policy if you beleive they will attack Turkey, its just wishful thinking on your behalf. Besides, dont you think you have been waiting long enough? isnt over 35 years of waiting for Russia to come to your rescue long enough? Wake up Oracle, or has age began to catch up with you mentally??
