South Ossetia and Abkazia

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby BC Numismatics » Tue Aug 26, 2008 2:12 pm

The Abkazian & South Ossetian situation has everything in common with the Trandniesterian situation - Russia's illegal occupation of sovereign states (Georgia & Moldova) & support for pirate regimes, which includes the Mugabe-type regime in Belarus!

Kosovo,on the other hand,IS LEGALLY an independent country that is recognised by quite a lot of countries.

Georgia should be allowed to join N.A.T.O.,as it needs to be given protection from the bully-boy that is the Russian Government.Moldova also needs to be given membership of N.A.T.O.,as does Ukraine.

What do you think?

Double standards in what way?

In the original thread started by Ray I said:

As I said before the above cases are totally different from Cyprus. I didn't have a look at the case of Abkhazia, but from what I've seen about S.Osetia, the Osetians have always been the vast majority of that region, somehting like the Kurds in Kurdistan.

Of course historically the Georgians can have some claims there, but my knowledge of the history of that region is not good enough to come to any final conclusions.

I never supported either side on this issue simply because I do not know their history good enough to express an opinion.

I simply expressed my opinion on how this development can affect the Cyprus issue.

Who is applying double standards is Bananiot.

According to Bananiot the case of Abkhazia and North Cyprus is the same. And while he is full against the Russians and Abkhazians, the Turks are his friends(!!!!) and he actually wants to give them to officially keep what they took from us by force! Why don't you advice the Georgians the same Bananiot? The power difference between Russia and Georgia is much greater than the difference between Turkey vs Cyprus/Greece.

I noticed that he used the term "ethnic cleansing" for what happened in Abkhazia. I don't remember Bananiot ever saying this for Cyprus.

No Bananiot, you are the one who is applying double standards.

I have not researched the case of Abkhazia so I can not express an opinion. But IF the case is exactly as you describe it (and this is a big "if" knowing that you often adopt the one sided propaganda of your favorite side and you are never objective), then I have no problem to say clearly that I disapprove any secession of Abkhazia from Georgia.

Piratis,
Abkhazia has NO LEGAL claim to independence, whereas,Kosovo DOES have the right to be recognised as a country anyway.

The problem though is that if this legal claim regarding Kosovo is based on the Self-Determination argument, and that the Russian Federation's move is being made on a similar basis, the claim made by the north of Cyprus to justify the 1983 UDI just became a lot more ligitimate... A very nasty Pandora's box has been opened, and here in Canada, that is giving more weight to the arguments of the Bloc Quebecois...

a few years ago russia was broke. now their fortunes have changed they think they can throw their weight around. remember the last war they had, afganistan, went home with their tails between their legs. so how are they going to take on turkey? they have made a very stupid move as they were getting lots of investment money before this happened, now people are not investing because they are unsure of how safe their money will be.

Think long term... Europe soon will have to find a way of turning piss into energy, where Russia so far have unlimited resources.
