VROMIKO TOIXOS

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Magnus » Tue Aug 26, 2008 12:12 am

I think this song is a terrible choice for a national anthem for the following reasons:

1. Hadjiyiannis sings like a girl and couldn't hold a tune in a bucket.

2. It's really quite dull. National anthems should be rousing. How is this crap supposed to inspire the football team, let alone the whole population or the army?

3. It's not patriotic as such, just a load of whining about some dude who wants to be 'friends' with the Turks but 'they' wont let him.

4. It makes Cypriots out to be a bunch of sulkers and victims instead of emphasising good character points.

5. The national anthem should represent things that all the people value. Not everybody wants to be 'friend and kardash' with the Turks. Some people just want to get on with their lives and have nothing to do with them.

I fully support Magnus' view ....

"Bananito" is a cold wet fish; tuneless and uninspirational. A least likely candidate for selecting a new anthem I could not predict ... except perhaps Viewpoint

His only saving Grace ... is that it is in Greek ... and depicts a nice shade of pink for the flag .... 8)

I don't think any song of Doros Georgiades will become national anthem. Might as well use a song by Garry Glitter. The two seem to have something in common.

No, I think I'll leave it at that. People following the local news 5-6 years ago will know what I mean.

Kafenes, your have made a serious accusation by associating Georgiades with Glitter. Still, it does not concern me. I think, as a mucisian, you should have commented on the song rather than on the writer. I am more interested on your opinion on the song, can we have it?

Does Georgdiadis wear flamboyant spaceman suits?

Bananiot, as a musician, my opinion will be more technically analytical. The lyrics are probably the best part of the song. The melody and the arrangement of the song I don't find impressive. Hadjiyannis, even though very young at the time, sings it pretty well. He is much better now and will get even better with time. With his talent and professionalism I believe he will be bigger then Dallaras one day. All in all a good song but definitely not a national anthem.

Bananiot, surely since you spent some time in the UK during the 70's, you must have gone to see some Kung-Fu films. They were very popular at the time.!

If I ever mention Elvis in the future, I hope you are not going to say, "Elvis who".!

How dare you refer to Elvis in the same breath as that Bruce thing ... Kikapu, I assure you the writer of the Bruce Lee scripts read the saying in some phylosophy manual. Did you like the song Kikapu?

Thanks for your feedback kafenes. I know nothing about music so my opinion does not amount to much in this respect. I thought it was a nice song because it reaches beyong the stereotype Greek-Turkish animosity and calls for peaceful coexistence of the two people. About Hadjiyiannis (I had him as a pupil at Dasoupolis Lyceum) I find the music he makes now totally unpalatable, granted his immence talent. His songs seem to be only for one use and people do not even know their titles. I am afraid he is served by music rather than serve music. He has chosen the wrong path, I feel. This will make him very rich but not great.
