Russian parliament have official recognized independence of 2 breakaway regions. Before anyone starts drawing conclusions in regards to Occupied Cyprus, this is completely different case... A Political tit for tat with west regarding Kosovo / Patriot Installation / Nato presence.

The circumstances are different, but some of the legal positions are the same.

For example, recognizing as an independent country an area internationally seen as part of another country.

Sounds familiar.

As I said before the above cases are totally different from Cyprus. I didn't have a look at the case of Abkhazia, but from what I've seen about S.Osetia, the Osetians have always been the vast majority of that region, somehting like the Kurds in Kurdistan.

Of course historically the Georgians can have some claims there, but my knowledge of the history of that region is not good enough to come to any final conclusions.

For Cyprus though I think this is actually a good development. Now the West will remember the importance of the sovereignty of independent counties and no doubt they will condemn this move by Russia. So if the Turks thought that Kosovo was a positive step for them and that the West was about to start recognizing all separatists, this will be a wake up call for them.

I would have said that there were very clear parallels with the north of Cyprus. In fact, a commentator on the BBC's respected Today radio programme made this very point this morning.
