Beijing 2008 - London 2012

Postby SSBubbles » Mon Aug 25, 2008 8:30 am

Listening to a 'phone-in on the radio last night it seemed listeners were divided at Great Britain's 8 minute parade at yesterday's closing ceremony! (I only caught a glimpse of it, so cannot really comment!)

Some said that it was 'too Londonish' with the double decker bus, bowler hats, umbrellas etc; yet others were proud that it 'typified' the capital city.

The radio host then begged the question 'What would you like to see the GB Olympic committee create for the opening ceremony in 2012' ?

I just wondered what your views were on this. Did Great Britain do herself any favours yesterday? If not, why?

What would YOU like to see in 2012?

Also, if this event came to Cyprus - (or any one of your countries), what would you like your Olympic committee to create?

Boris said that the English ceremonies wouldn't be as extravagent as the Chinese - but spectacular in their own way!! I think he is aware of the tax payers feelings on the cost!!! But I am sure they will come up with something good!! (can't do any worse than that awful Dome thing in 2000)!!!!

The reason the emphasis was on London is that a CITY is given the honour of hosting the games NOT a country.

ie The Beijing games NOT the Chinese games

City games! So does that mean the rowing and sailing will be in the Thames? That would make the games interesting.

I can your thinking RichardB- but athletes from all around the UK will be competing - not just London - so as some listeners suggested, the committee should reflect this.

Rowing will be at Eton Dorney near Windsor

Go on the London 2012 website for more info

I would hope people from all over the world will be competing bubbles but one would not expect the London games commitee to reflect this in their advertising - what do you expect shots of Kurium ampitheater above the banner 'Welcome to London 2012'

 That would please a lot of the English Cypriots out there Richard

As several callers pointed out, their countries will be also competing under the GB flag (i.e. Eire, Wales and Scotland) - not just the English, so why can't they be included?

Southern Ireland (Republic of Ireland) - as opposed to Northern Ireland.

Part of the British Isles, but self-governed.
