Campaign to support acid attack victims in Pakistan

Postby Tim Drayton » Sun Aug 24, 2008 1:44 pm

A campaign named Depilex Smile Again has been launched to provide plastic surgery to women in Pakistan who have had acid thrown in their faces as a punishment for things like walking unaccompanied in the street, wishing to go to school or refusing to submit to arranged marriages.

This is a BBC news report about this initiative:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3114323.stm

Here is the campaign's web site:
http://www.depilexsmileagain.com/facts.htm

You can find a series of gruesome photographs of such victims in this Turkish newspaper:

I think this initiative deserves support.

This nation is doomed to destruct it self , only yesterday suicide bombers detonated themselves and murdered tens of innocent men women and children. Their religious leaders must be brought to task , you can not carry on telling these illiterate people that carrying out these savage attacks is the will of their god and that in doing so they will gain entry into paradise. We fight terrorism but we fail miserably to fight these sick ideologies .
Remembering that Pakistan is a nuclear power sends a shiver down my spine . Lets hope that a strong leader emerges to curtail these ignorant and mostly illiterate fanatics.

I think there are also large numbers of progressive Pakistanis who aspire to live in a different kind of society. The people behind this campaign are one example.

yes it is true there are many cases like this but if you compare them with rape cases in USA(suppose to be more advance country in the world) .there will be no comparison. more than 2800 rape cases everyday in USA :(

Pakistan suppose to be an Islamic country but it is not. people have mixed Islam with tradition. If you read Muslim's holy book Quran. you wont find anywhere says that anybody has right to burn women with acid.

Why is it then that these wretched people are brainwashed into blowing themselves up killing innocent people in the FALSE belief that they will attain everlasting life in the falsehood called Paradise . Religion and fanatical Islam is nothing more that a cancer on society . Tell me why is it that illiterate nations and Islamic fundamentalism go hand in hand. The more illiterate people are the more likely they are religious. Believing in a non existent and violent God is a crime against the very fibre that makes our world a civilized place to be.

This is not an attack on Islam, mate.

I am suggesting on a purely humanitarian level that people should give some financial support, if nothing else, to a campaign which is helping the victims of this barbaric practice to overcome the extreme disfiguration which they have suffered, to regain their self-esteem and to become re-integrated into society.

I appreciate your effort to aware people. I will also request people in this forum to support these efforts to bring back life in those victims of inhuman action by misguided people. May God Almighty guide those who are misguided and cure those who are victims.

I don't personaly believe that it has anything to do with Islam, I think its a culture thing, not a religious thing. Many Women are burnt badly/killed in India after being doused in Kerosene, and the majority there are not Moslem. The same with (F) circumsicion, its carried out in parts of Nigeria by Christians!!! But this is a worthwhile cause and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
