a wedding party gone sour

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby Kikapu » Sun Aug 24, 2008 8:02 pm

Few years ago, one of my twin sister's daughter got married, and it appears, that in Turkey, they pin Gold pieces on the bride right after the ceremony. As people line up to congratulate the happy couple, they also pin these Gold pieces, but the disturbing part of the whole thing was, there is someone standing by the bride and announces how big or small the gold piece was by saying in Turkish "Kücük" or "Büyük" (Small or Big gold).!!

If you don't want to embarrass yourself, you better bring a BIG gold piece.!

Kikaup wants to know:

"So Nikitas, in the end, just exactly how much money did that macaroni & chicken cost you when you ended up pinning money on the bride and the groom.?"

Two five pound notes.I was a student back then and not too well heeled.

It is interesting that Cypriots moved from pinning to handing over envelopes with cash. Anyone remember the wedding ceremony in the Godfather? All those envelopes handed over to the bride and the sack she put them in? It took time but we finally caught up to our Sicilian cousins, after all they are part Greek too.

As you know,i have one son in his mid twenties and sooner or later his time will come to choose a partner..
BUT he clearly knows,if he wants mine or his mothers approval he doesn't bring us one of them.
I even accept an eskimo (no disrespect to eskimos here) but i DONT want a mainland Turk..

There is enough girls of his kind on the island to choose...he doesn't have the option of looking elsewhere.

I have already had this discussion with my son .... so I find your disclosure disconcerting. :?

I have told my son that if he finds and falls in love with a Turk (male or female) ... I will accept it completely, and be truly delighted he has found love. And I mean it ...

My cries of "Bloody Turks" and "I hate Turks", as I have always maintained are personal .... and not transferable ...

So why would you oppose your son's choice?
