Can Turkey take the ROC to court

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Shame we can't indict the Americans to the ICC... since they haven't signed up to it...

Kifeas

Postby LANDJO » Wed May 11, 2005 1:59 pm

Kifeas writes

The treaty states clearly that the RoC "undertakes not to participate, in whole or in part, in any political or economic union with any State whatsoever."
Is the European Union a State? The answer is "No." Therefore the RoC does not violate the treaty by becoming a member of the E.U.

Unfortunately, he is not right. The European Union (or, more correctly, the European Community, since the EU does not have legal personality) may not be a state, but in entering the EU, Cyprus is entering into a union with 24 other member states.

The Treaty of Guarantee is thus violated. But isn't the overall consensus among the GC's that the Treaty is null and void anyway?

It ammusing that people are accusing the RoC of Cyprus of violating the Treaty of Guarantee...after 30 years of abuse by Turkey. Are you typing this with a straight face? lol

My opinion for wot its worth, and its not worth much on this forum but:

Irrespective of who, what, how, why
I think Bush will allow one more round of talks.

If that fails he’ll have had enough, first one American plane at Ercan then another, then a British one, Israel, Pakistan, then the Arabs (they love casinos), then the Eu will be presented with a dilemma it can no longer ignore.

Ignoring the real problem

Of course it is amusing. Many things on this island are ridiculous to outsiders. But the post is straight in the vein of viewing the Cyprus problem as a legal rather than a political problem (although, plain to see for everyone, it is a political one) - a viewpoint strongly favored by the current administration.

Of course it's all nonsense. But the rules of the game appear to be such.

"had enough" you make it sound like Cyprus is the top priority on Bush's agenda.

the sad thing is that as soon as the TRNC is recognized the CYprus problem is no logner a problem. because it's ok for TCs to achieve partition but GCs are brutes for ever demanding what every other greek-speaking majority island in the mediterreanean got...

Tassos can avert recognition of TRNC and partition but as i always say he is for partition and i think he will do whatever it takes to keep the status quo this way until the unthinkable to GC happens but hey i hope i am wrong and he becomes Mr. peace and unity.
