Going to Pyla to pour chalk paint on Kemal sounds a little outlandish. If there was such tendency it would manifest itself elsewhere. It has not, no matter what Bananiot says.

Now if you want to see desecrations and vandalism take a trip to any of the hundreds of churches in the north and then we talk about it. It is ridiculous to turn ablinc eye to the industry of icon stealing and antiquities dealing there and moan about some chalk paint on one of the mass produced Kemal statues.

And since the subject borders on aesthetics, can the mass production of Kemal statues please stop. By now everyone knows what he looked like. The situation passed over into the realm of kitsch a long time ago. No need for futher reminders please!

Nikita,

save your breath, its ok for them to graffiti our mountain with chalk/paint/lights and they have the cheek to complain about some shitty statue. But This is acceptable to Bananiot as I don't hear any words of protest on that front from him.

perhaps the Barbarians also learnt Turkish as well!

What do you expect from these barbarian Turks? Eh?

OK the truth now, who makes these kitsch Attaturk staues? Is it a state or private factory? Is it a competitive business or a monopoly? If someone has managed to get the monopoly on them then we must take our hats off to the gentleman for his business acumen.

Is there no sense of aesthetics anywhere up there? Does no one realise that when you overuse a symbol it loses its power?

Yesterday in Kyrenia I met an old Turkish Cypriot man who became very rich after 1974. He was very upset at the prospect of reaching a solution in the forthcomiong talks and he was all poison for Talat and Ardogan. His name was Jaheed and he owns a lot of property in Ayios Yeorgios area and also in the Famagusta area as well.

As I said before, the rejectionists on both sides of the divide are scared stiff.

And what about your "acceptionists" who have benefited the most from the invasion and occupation and want to seal it to keep their gains for ever more? They have been permanently scared they might lose their free homes and free land, since 1974!

Keep giving your blessing to Turkey for handing you the gift of a troubled and Turk-occupied Cyprus Bananiot ... you must have prayed and waited for the Turks to come for years before 1974. So you accept their presence and we reject their presence ...

i work next door to where this happened. i know many gc's and tc's living in the village of Pyla and even the gc's living there admitted it was probably gc's coming from another village. i spoke to the un officials on wednesday as they came around to innterview all business owners in the area. It was only turkish run businesses and property that was damaged. The turkish gold shop, the clothing shop, the supermarket owner's car with TC plates on it and of course the turkish school. Speaking to the TC kids in the village, I am pretty certain it wasn't Turks that damaged their own property. Most of the TC's and mainland Turks in that village all get along with eachother, they stick together.

i don't know exact figures but there are a hell of a lot. As i meet them and get to know the people I am always very interested to know if they're mainland turkish or turkish cypriot. There are also a lot of english turkish cypriots living in Pyla as well. Very nice village, I would recommend a day trip over there.

Halil,

Someone started a thread on Cyprus44 about this (suspected) juvenile vandalism and titled it: "Cam Turks and Greeks Ever Live Together". You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?
