Big Figs! .... Megala Sika! ....

Postby Oracle » Wed Aug 13, 2008 1:20 pm

Does anyone know the Greek :? word, but I suspect it is another Cypriot colloquialism, for those occasional big figs that a Fig Tree ( sidjia 8) ) produces?

I think they might be like the first few ripened, before it goes into a wave of constant production of normal ones, later in the season. .... But they are BIG!

Magiles, probably derived from "mia tzoilia) meaning first birth. You should keep away from them.

Bananiot that honestly doesn't ring any bells with me :? My cousin used it several weeks ago and I went off into a daydream as I remembered my dad using that word too .... but I just can't recall it now.

Maybe it is a Paphitiki word :?

But why would one keep away from Magiles?.... mia tzoilia surely means one belly ... why first birth?

I heard the word Maxilla used around the Polis region for large figs.

They are not that tasty, taste like straw. Mia tzoilia to indicate that they are the first to come out of the belly. The first to ripen. Much earlier than the normal figs. Pronounced ma tji les

I think you are correct Miltiades. Trust the Paphians to use a latin term meaning nipple like.

Maxilla .... Magilla :? No, definitely not the word I am looking for ....

It's driving me crazy now, but he'll think I've gone mad if I phone him to ask, unless I can weave it into a normal conversation

I think this should be 'Proti Tzoilia' as the first ones.
