Well done Nicole .... :D

First of several I predict for Great Britain!

SKY wrote:Simon Clegg, Team GB's chef de mission, said: "Nicole Cooke has just secured Team GB's first medal - and what a medal.

"It's not only gold but it's Team GB's 200th gold medal from the modern Olympic Games."

Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell, in Beijing, told Sky News: "It's fantastic news and congratulations to Nicole.

"It's wonderful, a huge lift for Team GB."

Nicole finished in 3hr 32min 24sec to become the first British rider to win gold in an Olympic road race.

Sweden's Emma Johansson won silver and Tatiana Guderzo of Italy the bronze.

Pre-race favourites Marianne Vos of the Netherlands and Germany's Judith Arndt finished in a group of riders 21secs behind.

Team GB has done it again .... :D

BBC wrote:Britain's Rebecca Adlington took a historic gold in the women's 400m freestyle, while her team-mate Jo Jackson claimed the bronze medal.

Adlington timed her late surge to perfection as she became Britain's first female Olympic swimming champion in 48 years.

The 19-year-old from Mansfield pipped Katie Hoff of the United States by just seven 100ths of a second.

Jackson also staged a late rally to edge Coralie Balmy into fourth place.

The British pair both paced their races superbly, reaching 100m and 200m in sixth and eighth place respectively.

Just over half a second separated the field at the halfway point, with Adlington reaching 300m in fifth and Jackson just ahead in fourth.

I'll just post this for completion to show that the "trnc" criminals are feeling miffed ...

BAYRAK/halil wrote:Foreign Minister Turgay Avci has accused the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias of making insincere and distorted statements at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Speaking on the issue, the Foreign Minister complained that the Greek Cypriot leader, who pretentiously talked about peace and friendship between nations at the Beijing games, did not refrain from continuing to wage his polices that denies the existence, status and political equality of Turkish Cypriots.

Pointing out that the flag raised at the games was a Greek Cypriot flag, Avci said that the world needed to know that the Greek Cypriot Administration and the so-called Republic of Cyprus did not represent the Turkish Cypriot people.

“If that flag really does represent Turkish Cypriots as claimed, how is that the Cyprus Olympic team introduced by Christofias does not even have one Turkish Cypriot on it? He should explain why a single Turkish Cypriot is not taking part in the Olympics,” he added.

Avci said that talking about friendship and brotherhood between Turkish and Greek Cypriots at the Olympic Games at a time when Turkish Cypriot football clubs are not even allowed to play friendly matches with other international teams was nothing by hypocrisy.

... what idiocy from Avci

All Cypriot athletes are welcome to register with KOA and the Cyprus Olympics Committee as are all TC football clubs welcome to register with the CFA. Then they can go to Beijing, Tokyo, Bangkok...wherever they please.

Yes, so why don't they just do the sensible thing, and stop whining from the sidelines

And how can they complain that they raised the Cypriot flag, did he expect them to wave the Greek one :?

All the athletes carried the RoC flag, alongside a red one, and as I was near convulsion, my son reminded me it was the Flag of China

If you look up on the official webiste of Bejing 2008,the registered anthem for Cyprus is "Ymnos eis tin Eleftherian" (national anthem for Greece)
Do you seriously expect any TC to participate under KOA and the Cyprus Olympics Committee when you havent even made an attempt to choose an anthem to represent Cyprus?

This national anthem issue is a disgrace and (in my opinion) an insult to ANY Cypriot.
If ROC is going to claim to represent ALL Cypriots then they should have stopped using Ymnos eis tin Eleftherian long time ago!!

I agree with you regarding the anthem. It is however an excuse, would you prefer we choose an anthem of our own for Cyprus pre-solution? Or is that the gc and tc athletes are going to win so many golds that we'll be playing the anthem every day?

I don't see what choice the ROC has on the anthem. I think you will find 90% of GC's in agreement as to the need of a new Cypriot anthem but is this something we can do pre-solution?
