"partition appears to be the only solution" Wash.T

It appears that the US Govt has written off any chance of a negotiated settlement and is reluctantly supporting for the partition of the island.

These are bad signs, because the division does not benefit any side in Cyprus.

While Mehmet Ali Talat, president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), reiterated willingness to accept the U.N. plan as the basis for further discussions, Greek-Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos maintained his objections.

Do you think this American journalist uses the terms like president of TRNC or Greek Cypriot President on purpose or simply he is one of the stupid Yankees?

Any evolution of the situation in Cyprus is considerably hampered by the overwhelming rejection by the Greek Cypriots of the U.N. plan -- hailed by Washington and the European Union as the best possible solution.
By joining the EU last year, the Greek Cypriots hoped for European support for their cause, but the union now appears to be favoring the Turkish Cypriots, who voted in favor of the solution proposed by the United Nations.

We keep saying this but the Greek side keeps playing its EU membership card to get more concessions from Turkey and there is no hope left for a solution in these days.

I'm assuming that a journalist on a newspaper with the pedigree of the Washington Times knows that 'presdident' must always normally be in inverted commas

Unfortunately partition will just serve some elitists. The masses from both sides will lose.In the end the ones who will lose almost everything will be the TC masses, because they will be forced to abandon the place and be replaced by cheap labourers.
Anyway I dont see agreed partition coming unless the TC side agrees on 18% which I doubt they can do.

Maybe formalised partition will not happen and when there is a moderate GC administration in a few years the negotiations based on the A-plan will be resurrected...

Economies being what they are, and profit motives being what they are.
And Cyprus being some tiny little island that the Un is fed up of dealing with. And if Cyprus is going to hinder the Eu from getting its hands on Turkey's resoures...............Then de-facto is coming.

One American plane officially landing at Ercan is all it will take.

Thats how easily it can happen, its not fifty years away, infact it could be as near as one more Papadop refusal to negotiate.

Can you see a new GC administration in say 5 years time coming back to the table to do a deal - after the TRNC has had direct flights, trade and investment in infrastructure and hosts a million tourists a year?

A recognized TC state in full cooperation with Turkey can take all necessary measures to protect the interests of native TCs. No TCs immigrate to other countries if there was a recognized TC state in North. To the contrary of this majority of migrated TCs would return to their country. By having good relations with Turkey, everything can work in favour of TCs. It's not hard to take necessary measures to protect native TCs, increase the standart of life by establishing a strong tourism industry in North.
