Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

280 Euros per year to get my bins emptied THREE times per week in Cyprus ....

(and I don't generate more rubbish in the UK than Cyprus  , though the over-packaging is still disgraceful at Sainsbury's  ).

So far .... the answer is a big OXI (NO) ..... I have not been ripped off in Cyprus!

Oracle you must be very rich or very foolish for paying privately for having your bins emptied Or is that you are refering to council tax for which refuse collections account for a tiny part. If it is the second read the information which accompanies council tax bills.

Methinks you actually realise that bin collections don't cost what you state but as usual you are distorting the truth.

I don't personally receive any other services from the Council. That was the only personal service I needed the council for last year.

Whereas in Cyprus as well as my bins being emptied, I did also receive help from the police and used a state school (or are those Centrally funded in Cyprus?).

I live South of the Mason Dixon line there Sir!!

Just kidding. I live close to the South, but not in the South...nor the North. I am not bothered by being called a Yankee (except during baseball season  )

I got ripped of on the bottle, but I got treated well by the dancer. :D

The entire nation is engaged in fiddling , starting from the Right Honourable Members of HM Government ,
Councils up and down the country ripping everyone off , soon they will introduce a penalty charge if your rubbish bin is full to the brim , they do so already in some parts of London .
Traffic regulations that are designed to rip the motorist off , nothing what so ever to do with the flow of the traffic.
It is pleasing however that Westminster Council , looking after Central London , have banned vehicle clamping and vehicle removal as from 27th June 08 !! Now all the private removal trucks are concentrated in other parts of London each jostling for " business " , it costs £350.00 to have your car released.
Business rates are at an all time high , in return what does the council give back in return ? Nothing.
They have the audacity to demand a fee for using the pavement outside your business when receiving goods into the shop. They pass by with cameras and photograph goods in transit from pavement to shop and then claim that you are engaged in street trading !! A bunch of crooks !
In all there is so much corruption right here in the UK , it makes Cyprus look squeeky clean !

If someone came on here and made a post like that about Cyprus, then the immediate answer would be "why the hell do you live there then?" If the UK is so bad, why does everyone want a British passport?

Those of us that live in the UK , just as those of you who live in Cyprus , have an undeniable right and a duty to take notice of what goes on in our respective domicile countries . I for one , having fully integrated right here in the UK , having for the last 47 years worked and paid taxes here in the UK , having also the common sense to judge where judgment is needed , must criticize aspects of life when criticism is justified . The UK has become a nation of con artists , starting from the local councils , Transport for London , all Banks , Building societies , Insurance companies , all are committed to ripping the public off .
From June 28th the removal and the clamping of vehicle in the West End of London has been made ILLEGAL. All these greedy mafia contractors to Transport of London , having lost a very lucrative area of their legalised daylight robbery activities have now moved in force in other areas where this punitive and highly controversial act of taking someones vehicle away and demanding £350 for release is still happening.

The difference between corruption and rip off methods in Cyprus and the UK is that in the UK it has become a highly developed industry , take builders , Gas repairers ( TRANSCO CHARGE £148 PLUS VAT FOR A CALL OUT AND DEMAND YOUR CREDIT CARD UP FRONT ) Corgi registered engineers charge from £90 per hour upwards and a simple change of a thermocouple costing a few pounds ends up costing over £300 . Every one is out to con every one else , Restaurants serving left overs time and time again , craftsmen dedicated to taking as much out of you as they can , yes Sir the country ain't what it used to be and dont tell me if I dont like it to get out , this is my country !!

To sum all up , the difference between corrupt practices in the UK and Cyprus are the same as those of a high class prostitute and a street walker !!

The subject is "Have you been ripped off in Cyprus?", so what has your experience in the UK got to do with it? People have attempted to rip me off in just about every country I have visited, but that's not up for discussion. It's Cyprus we're talking about. I have never seen a can of Redbull cost €15 in a minibar fridge anywhere in the world apart from Cyprus.

Point taken mate , introducing the UK as a comparison puts a perspective on the con artists of Cyprus . The example you gave above I take it is the cost from a Hotel minibar, may we know which hotel charges this . An extortionate amount to pay almost as bad as the telephone charges levied by most UK hotels , at £2.50 per minute for European calls , a packet of peanuts , to go with your beer costing £3.50 and a small bottle of mineral water equally at 3.50 .
Mobile calls from Cyprus are amongst the cheapest in the Europe especially calling from overseas . The UK mobile operators charge astronomical sums for calls made by UK mobiles when calls are made from Cyprus. The cost on 3 mobile from Cyprus to a Cyprus mobile carries a £2.60 minimum charge and a minute charge of £1.60 !!!

I have heard that in some bars in Cyprus the cost of a beer is as high as 10 euro , but I should think this is applicable to the Cabaret type of bars that are there primarily to fleece the visitor by offering a unique to Cyprus service , ( although equal facilities are available in the UK at "gentlemen's " clubs ) the provision of a prostitute sitting next to you !!!

As far as the Cypriot hotels are concerned they have a long way to go yet in order to match the UK hotels , which are incidentally the most expensive in Europe.
In Cyprus the rip off merchants become well known and people tend to avoid them or use them as little as possible. Airport taxis are atrociously expensive more so from Paphos airport to town.

Yes but by the scum Brits who've moved here in droves since entry into the EEC.
Quite frankly it's like living on the set of Eastenders in the ex pat community now.
"Yes I'll clean your bungalows windows; that'll be €30".
"Yes I'll build you a tatty wobbly fence; that'll be €1365.
"Yes I'll do two hours of weeding; that'l be €140.
"Actualy I was a binman in the UK now I'm a pool maintenance engineer; I bought all thes chemicals and a leaflet from Shipshape".
etc, etc, etc.

Well seeing as you say yes you have been ripped off one would have to question your intelligence in paying it.
Most people with at least half a brain cell would tell them where to go.
