Aegean Sun in N. Cyprus storm

Athens yesterday ordered the Greek captain of a Greek-flagged cargo ship thought to have made an unauthorized call at the Turkish-occupied port of Famagusta in Cyprus to depart immediately on pain of imprisonment.

“After we learned that a Greek vessel illegally put in at the occupied port of Famagusta, orders were issued for the most severe penalties to be imposed on the shipowning company and on the captain of the Aegean Sun,” Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis said. The vessel, which is understood to have been chartered to a UK firm, was allegedly delivering cars from Britain.

Kefaloyiannis said the captain, who was not named, had received “strict orders” to return to the closest Greek port, or face two years in jail. Furthermore, the master of the roll-on, roll-off ship, which belongs to Greece’s Aegean Cargo, has been stripped of his license pending disciplinary action, under a 1980 ban on putting in at Turkish-Cypriot ports. “Greek ships that do not uphold our national interests cannot fly the Greek flag,” the minister said.

-Isn't it a strange irony that a Greek ship became the first to ignore the embargo on North Cyprus?

Just for info.

Ships arrive in the north all the time. My good were shipped from the UK to Cyprus. Many ships do this and have done for ages. What is 'unusal' is for such ships to dock in the south immediately after having docked in the north.

What is the big fuss about, this was only a man doing his job via the orders given to him by his boss.

I believe that the British are behind this.
Why did it happen this period that the British are trying to do their best for the removal of the embargo at the occupied areas?

Part of the article of Kathimerini newspaper, regarding this matter, says:
"...The ship, which is owned by Greece’s Aegean Cargo shipping firm but had been chartered to a British company, put in at Famagusta on Thursday, with a consignment of second-hand cars from the UK. Stylianos has claimed that he was unaware of the ship’s true destination, believing he was headed for Alexandretta, but was forced by the British company to go to Famagusta".

The only thing I thought funny about this was the fact that how come this Greek ship was carrying a TRNC flag to enable her to enter the north ports….LOL

THAT HAS TO BE THE QUESTION OF THE YEAR.

Ηoly crap!
The company that owns the ship got fined by the Greek Government 5,200,000 euros for the ship docking at Famagusta.

That's a lot of money, ain't it? It should be a powerful deterrent...

It is not unusual for any sea vessel to fly a "courtesy " flag of that country in whose waters she is sailing Normally at the top of the main mast and much smaller than the flag where the ship is registered (Normally at the back of the ship). So it is likel;y that this ship would be flying a Greek Ensign at her stern ( Country of Registration) and a smaller TRNC courtesy flag from her main mast.

It would further appear that Economic interests far outweigh Political Interests. Wonder how much the captain got paid.

British Plot?? Nice that it was a Greek ship. Very Funny

I just find it strange that a greek ship carries TRNC flag, full stop.
Either they do not recognise and they say it is illegal but still carry the flag, could it be even the greeks have started to accept the TRNC.
