I have been extremely lucky with my bosses - both male and female!

One complaint though - when myself and Webbo were engaged we had a small party. Circumstance meant it was mid-week and my then boss would not give the following day off work! I think I went to bed at 4am and was up for work at 7am!! Not recommended!

that reminds me of the dirty dentist i worked for. he was in europe on vacation, i was in the process of moving, and i wanted one day off, like there was work to do with him away, and he wouldn't let me take it.
another time i was really sick...really sick, and i was in so much pain i was crying, and he wouldn't let me go home.

one assistant manager, way way back, i liked alot, but he was married...i wouldn't really say it was a crush though, but we got along really well, we would have made a good couple if not for his wife.
p.s. he ended up committing suicide.

i had nothing to do with his suicide. it was his wife's son that drove him to it. (his step son)

Just remembered another time when I was allowed to go home early as our then family dog had been taken to the vet's and not returned home!
I was so upset I could not work and my boss even gave me a lift home. Not sure if that was wise as on my return home, everyone was crying and upset and not having our beloved lab around was quite heartbreaking :(

About 19 yrs ago a friend (not close - my daughter was friends with her son) was murdered and her son had to stay with me until her family came to collect him. The boy was dropped off at around 3.30am to my house. I phoned and explained what happened and my manager said - will you be in by lunchtime? Needless to say I wasn't!!!

The more I read of this thread the more convinced I am that the relationship of boss-employee is a perverese one, and I am glad that I never allowed it in my business. There are lingering remnants from the slavery era, bosses seem pleased to exercise control over the lives of their workers.

How to avoid this? I told people who did work for me to register as self employed with the labor and tax offices and then we worked out a price per piece of work. They made more money, in less time, and there was no way for me, as "boss", to interfere with their lives and how they arranged their time. The only thing I could demand was the work on time and up to standard. To put it in legal jargon, our contract made status irrelevant.

Most of the people are still self employed, with much expanded businesses. Sadly, some of them have become traditional bosses with employees.
