Priest fined for beating puppy
A NICOSIA district priest was fined after an eyewitness reported him beating a stray puppy black and blue.
The priest, who chose to pay the fine to avoid going to court, has denied laying a finger on the animal, reports said yesterday.
The incident took place in Tseri village earlier this month and was witnessed by a Nicosia dog shelter volunteer.
According to local news reports, Nicosia dog shelter president Sharon Beckett was passing by the village cemetery when she heard the puppy crying. Following the sound, she came upon the priest beating the defenceless four-legged creature. The animal rights activist’s presence and cries prompted the priest to stop what he was doing and the frightened puppy ran off. Beckett found it and took it with her.
She later reported the incident to the Community Council. But according to her it did nothing about the issue, forcing her to appeal to the police.
The priest had allegedly denied touching the dog and said he had simply found it on his parents’ grave and had tried to shoo it away. He admitted that the fact that a stray dog was on his parents’ grave had angered him and added that strays had no place in a holy place. Nevertheless, rather than go to court and to put an end to the case, he agreed to pay a fine.
The puppy has since been adopted by a Nicosia family.

my my, what a disturbing piece of news from paradise.
Kudos to the Shelter employee who pushed the case to the limits. however, just a fine? why not throw the priest in jail and kick him to a bloody, pulpu mess? is the dog any less of God's creations than he is? and to think--all this time, i had the funny idea that being Christian was about love.
