It is historically significant because of a certain someone who lived there when it was first built, and for being the only one of its kind remaining since the air raids of WWII.

Well if its the only one of its kind left since the air raids of ww2 its either a prefab..........
or a six bedroomed Anderson shelter!!

Do you not understand English.

It was built in the 1880's along with other similar houses, but it is now the only one still remaining, since the bombings.

Anyway .... according to hubby, the water-supply had been cut off regularly during the night for "essential" repairs to the vintage system prevalent in this area, and apart from the usual warnings to not run the washing machine until all discolouration had disappeared from the mains water, we are now left with tap water that smells like bleach and even Oil of Bergamot can't disguise the taste of chlorinated tea

Still there's always Radio 2 to soothe .... I wonder if my Jeremy Vine 8) is still on :?

I find the best way to deal with people at the local authority is to 'talk posh' at them. If you use the appropriate language and intonation they instantly regress to tugging their forlocks and do as they're told. Even if they aren't British they will regress back to the old colonial days.

I think it's some sort of genetic-memory but you would probably know more about that sort of thing than I would. It usually works like a charm.

I find asking for their name and details of the complaints proceedure produces good results.

Did you get the pet eventually?

Magnus, you have been watching to many tv period dramas.
The only way to deal with anyone is be polite and speak in plain language.
Long gone are the days of repect for a public school accent and an arrogance of use of the English language.

I hope it is :D ..... and consequently your Tax Bill

It's not that it is that big (only 6 bedrooms) it's just the sneaky way they have found to Tax us further since we are at the top of the scale.

The two front doors were constructed in Victorian times when it was built ... so why now, do they think they can consider it as two properties and give us a second Tax bill as though the servants quarters could be considered a separate entity.

Deniz .... best thing about the UK so far (outside immediate family and pets) ....

They are happy to recycle my rubbish

Green van came by this morning and took papers, bottles and plastics (duly separated) off for re-cycling. (One point for U.K.)

That guilt I felt back in the village has been discarded .... and I am determined to make Cyprus re-cycle my rubbish too!

Only ONE measly point!

Good luck! Just look how long it did take the UK to get up to speed! I cannot seeing it happening here anytime soon, even with EU rules and regulations!!

Have to disagree with this! Talk to anyone in your natural voice is always the best policy. There is no need to be condescending! :x
