We never had a problem with our local CT office - even after moving here and keeping our property back home. They went above and beyond their call of duty with phone calls and e-mails to keep us updated! :)

Once we sold our property the overpaid Council Tax was refunded within a week; now that is what I call service. :D

Our house has historical significance and this is more a ploy to make us fall into a Capital Gains trap ...

All our smaller properties, (like your home probably :) ) have not attracted much interest from them also, and have been fine ... but where they smell real money ... I am afraid they are going for the kill ...

(Still I have no intention of selling, so they are wasting their efforts  )

It is so comforting to feel that you are so close now. I hope you enjoy your stay including your 'mini wars' with the council.
What about your 'rubbish'. Are the council happy with the rubbish you churn out. Watch out when they begin charging you for it.

I hope it is :D ..... and consequently your Tax Bill

It's not that it is that big (only 6 bedrooms) it's just the sneaky way they have found to Tax us further since we are at the top of the scale.

The two front doors were constructed in Victorian times when it was built ... so why now, do they think they can consider it as two properties and give us a second Tax bill as though the servants quarters could be considered a separate entity.

@Bubbles

It is historically significant because of a certain someone who lived there when it was first built, and for being the only one of its kind remaining since the air raids of WWII.

Hi Sotos

We are back, briefly, to sort-out stuff.

I was overwhelmed by the options available in Cyprus and I decided I could do more, as well as have village life. So a little re-think is required.

It is easier to travel around Cyprus than I gave it credit for. So there are more possibilities open. Such as live and work in one of the Cities and have a village bolt-hole.

It takes me nearly two hours to get to the place I used to work (only 15 miles away) here in the U.K.

The traffic jams are unbelievable; the volume of cars and lorries

And because of the way the trains are mismanaged (constant delays and cancellations) as well as distances of stations from home / workplace, it took the same time by train (even though the actual train journey time was only 12 minutes).

I loved work but dreaded the commuting because it was so unpredictable in a stressful way, not enjoyable. It also made fitting research-work between school-hours unproductive.

Altogether, it made me as ratty as everyone around me.

Hubby cycles, which takes about 1 hour. But he is not the one that has to fit in school activities and times; so I do not have that luxury.

Anyway the normal working-hours and easy travel in Cyprus, means you can work and have a family life more easily. :D

Perhaps an appeal on 'single' residency. At some time it must have house two distinct families. Good luck O.

Yeah we have six months to appeal (most already used up due to my absence  ) .... but I am seeing someone next week who thinks it can all be sorted, since I have pointed out a loophole by which I can nullify their immediate advantage (non-Council Tax paying students can have their uses  ).

I have another safety-net loophole I have worked out, should the first not achieve the desired elbow power

(I love solving problems :) )

BTW: I am in favour of community tax (even though I do not personally use most of their main services) but this is a principle of violation of privacy and my home.

No Deniz .... it has always been a single residency and has not passed through many hands in its long history (I think we are only the fourth owners and we have been here some dozen years). But I have a good rapport with the Council and immediate alarm may yet lead to a sane solution and then the UK will be on a par with Cyprus for being reasonable and amenable to logic. :D

I hope your good raport continues after your meeting. Forget you are Greek and wear your English hat. Somehow I am confident you will win.

Deniz .... best thing about the UK so far (outside immediate family and pets) ....

They are happy to recycle my rubbish

Green van came by this morning and took papers, bottles and plastics (duly separated) off for re-cycling. (One point for U.K.)

That guilt I felt back in the village has been discarded .... and I am determined to make Cyprus re-cycle my rubbish too!
