Wireless LAN, right? Sounds like your WLAN router is acting up. Dig up a regular TP cable and connect the laptop straight to the router and see if it works better. If it does it's the WLAN function acting up (check the antenna, make sure you put the router on a strategic location to achieve the best connectivity).

If this doesn't help at all it's possibly the router itself. To narrow things down and isolate the problem use the TP cable and bypass the router (if it's possible) so you connect straight into the wall or cable modem or whatever you have on your end. If that works you will most likely need a new router. Netgear 54 Mbps WLAN routers are affordable and does the job well.

I honestly have no idea what you have just said, so I will tell Webbo!

Thanks very much for your help though, it is greatly appreciated

Thanks to all others too; I will let you know how I get on :(

honestly... you dont even know how to describe your problem. Maybe take it to service center of some computer shop and give them a chance to rip you off.

I recently bought a laptop as my desktop kept shutting down and sulked for several days, then started normally. I had a cyta box for the desktop and my laptop has wireless connectivity. I was told to contact cyta for an up-to-date box for the broadband. Cyta told me they had run out and said to buy a router. So now I have two boxes one on top of the other. Both desktop and laptop connect via the wireless connection. I was warned that people in the nearby houses could tune in to my wireless connection and that was the reason cyta were reluctant to provide the new boxes (or router I think they're called).

When the wireless connection played up at the beginning of the heatwave I had to call the guy who provided the laptop in to fix it. He showed me how to pull out the power wires from both boxes, stick the old wire into in the new box and hang onto the other wire, wait for the connection to take place, then reverse the process. Well, it worked and again on a second occasion - yes, you've guessed it - I know nothing about computers, but am determined not to let that fact beat me. Annaka.
