Letters from the TRNC

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The Komi Kebir olive press has been renovated with money donated by the US embassy in Nicosia, because the building is considered a prime example of adobe construction (plitharka) and because of the symbolism of the olive tree etc. You can visit the embassy site for more info.

Thanks for the info Nikitas. My memory of the details of the press are not too good but I think I must have seen the later version of the one that was restored. The link on the US Embassy website is here for anyone that is interested:-

Hi RW - It was with some sadness that I read your penultimate post. My sympathies.

A relative often speaks of his days in Komi Kebir, pre-'60. I'll seek him out and post something if of value.

Hey RW and Bill, my Dad came from Komi Kebir. He left in 1935 but some of his family lived their until 1974. The family home was behind the police station, it had two large metal gates. I first stayed there in 1961, I remember the primitive toilet and having to fetch water from the village tap, no electricity just paraffin lamps at night. My dad took us to the kafeneon to "show off" his sons to the village men, we thought they were very rude at first because they kept staring but they were very kind and made a fuss of us.

Ha ha. Sounds just like me in 1961. Especially the centipedes and cockroaches in those toilets which my grandmother washed down after I spent all morning carrying the water from the village tap/fountain. Where ia the difference, you say @Panayiamou', we say 'Allahu Ekber'. Is that good enough reason to hate?

The good old days Deniz. My brother and I were keen campers in the UK so "roughing it" in Komi Kebir was not quite the shock to us as it was to our more sensitive UK cousins. What I hated most, however, were the flying beetles, they used to fly towards the lights on the veranda where we would try and swat them with an old racquet.

Speaking of Panayiamou, I wonder if "holy cow" is the modern American irreverent version of the same expression.

'Holy Cow' looks like a misplaced profanity. It sure is Holy for the Eastern Indians. Bu Americans? No idea. Sorry.

Sorry guys but just got back from Bellapais Abbey and I have to get up at seven tomorrow to go and see how Hellim is made and see the animals the milk comes from. We spent most of the day in Girne castle which I loved especially as they are slowly making the place a better. I felt like a real Cypriot today as I got a discount on the entry fee from 12ytl to 5ytl. :D :D :D :D It was so bloody hot though!!!

I am so tired I don't care if I just made sense up there. I will have to write more tomorrow but we will be going to Yesil Irmak after the farm trip so another long day.

I do wonder sometimes if RW and Nikitas even read what I have written before responding. My observations are the reality of today and my lack of knowledge of yesterday should be a credit to my accounts rather than the negative twist that you guys are putting on it. I see what is there today and do not wallow in nostalgia so you are going to get it as it is. Your government has no power here and people are living their lives as they are meant to with long term plans. This means the TCs and not the mainland Turks. The one legitimate government on the island died and two have taken its place. You no longer have Denktas to contend with but the entire TRNC. The naivety of Billy boy Boobits "Ask and you will know" plan is just laughable. The GCs here will not risk upsetting their hosts and the TCs are just getting on with their lives. It is the politically active that I want to meet and hope to do so because just as in the South, they are the ones that will have the first and final say. I know one thing and that is the TCS are waking up and are becoming the politically active. We have a long way to go yet but the engine is running.

Good night all......

Zan, you get uesd to "it" and get over "it". big deal your little "we", I did not mention politics, you did. why not read your own posts, and, once again, have a vacation, and quit with the political crap or stand up and take what is coming for being offish.

zan do I pose such a formidible threat that you need to take the opportunity to knock me? have a nice vacation, enjoy, and shut the fuck up, or keep yapping, but choose.

Just a quick post this morning while I am having my coffee.

RW

Your Ghandi like approach is gone and while I morn the passing I knew it was in dire straights from the start. My objection and the return to hostilities is your reluctance, with the sarcastic questioning of place names, to accept the situation as it is. False sympathies from the likes of you and other saints whilst at the same time ignoring the alternatives to your suggested Valhalla is something that I take exception to. The same mentality that Miltiades has in that he wants re-unification but only under "RoC" conditions.

So my friend.......When asking me to take what I deserve on this thread, something which I have always been prepared to do, then you should take your own advise when resorting to sarcasm and hardening your stance. If you think that I had doubts about what this thread would turn into then your head is buried in the sand deeper than I thought and when you accused me of picking a fight with you then all I can say to you is....YOU STARTED IT!!!!!!!!

Zan bey,
I hear from my brother in law who is also in cyprus at the moment that the weather is quite warm, why dont you go and take a swim in the beautiful waters of Girne and come back and describe to our GC's how nice it was...
Have a great time and if you run into a group of 5 aussie tc's in their mid twenties there, say g'day from me.

Gunaydin Zan. Enjoy your short holiday peacefully with your loved ones. The responses you are getting are designed to tarnish it for you. I am prepared to read your letters and photos after your return.

Enjoy the blue med now. See you soon.

Selamlar

Nostalgia Zan works when we look at any part of Cyprus, regardless of north or south. It is common to have fond memories of your childhood and places associated with it. I recall fondly learning to ride a donkey, but I assure you I am not about to ditch me drivers license and start four legged commuting!

I am very interested in your account, precisely because you do not have these childhood bonds to any place on the island. So keep on writing. And I will keep on commenting.
