I will answer you on this thread if you don't mind. My sisters have sold their houses in the UK and bought (Very carefully) only TC land and or houses. They have had no help or handouts from anyone. They have nothing to fear from unification except the loss of identity andliving as a minority again.... I say again because we have done that in the UK all our lives. I have written before about the UK of yesterday not being the multi-cultural society of today so the hardships we faced is very real. We are not about to sign away our rights in the only place we feel equal with our own people.
Today I asked the people we met what they thought about unification and if they were all for it. Some are in Guzelyurt living in GC homes because their homes are in the South. The others are in Yesilirmak, my fathers village. what they said was that enclaves were out of the question for a start. I asked if they would be happy with a Greek government and us as a minority and they said " Eh! Biz neyik". They also said that they would never give up the guarantor of Turkey. This is the voice of those that have never left the island.
When in Girne and Lefcosa we went to eat at the Turkish cafe/restaurant, I could not help but notice the funny looks I got from these people that I had actually come to eat at their cafe when they heard my TC accent. I then started to notice that TCs did not eat at these places....Did I see it wrong? What is this utanmazlik? The TCs seem to like feeling superior. Those of us that have lived in a multi-cultural society seem to find it easier to relate. This is about governments and not about the everyday person. It is as unfair as Lena telling me that if I am nice to the GCs, if I cross over, then they will be nice to me. Thanks Lena but you could not be more insulting if you tried. My protest of not coming over is because of politics not because I hate or fear all GCs. I could care less if all the GCs moved over to the TRNC. What I want, and I believe what every TC wants , is representation and acknowledgement. It is those that think they are going to get rich by unification that are the danger and not the ones who might lose a house. They seem to want to sell their souls and their Turkishness for cash.
Anyway......I have already said more than I wanted to. Good night all. I am having a wonderful time here and have not felt this close to my home for as long as I can remember. We are starting to bloom and boom. Turkish road signs, Turkish shops and TC accents everywhere.
I've read this article from Zan a week ago, and I have been having a hard time getting rid of what I read from my mind. This is written from a man who calls the "trnc" his country where the TC's belong and should remain along with the settlers.
He first made this statement about his sister moving to the "trnc" from the UK.
They have had no help or handouts from anyone. They have nothing to fear from unification except the loss of identity and living as a minority again....
Well, they are living as minorities right now in their "own trnc country" and Zan was told this point blank by other TC's in the north..
But if that wasn't bad enough, the next sentence by Zan, was an icing on a cake with his delusional understanding of what it means to be a citizen of your own country when Zan went to eat at a Turkish restaurant.
"When in Girne and Lefcosa we went to eat at the Turkish cafe/restaurant, I could not help but notice the funny looks I got from these people that I had actually come to eat at their cafe when they heard
my TC accent".
Since when does a natural born citizen of a country see themselves as having
an accent, as Zan was spotted having an
accent by the Turks. It just goes to show just who sees who as a foreigner in their "own country", which the Turks see the TC's as the outsiders, because the Turks appeared to look "funny" at Zan for wanting to come an eat at their establishment, and Zan stood out like a
sore thumb, because he has a
TC accent in his own "country of trnc"..!!
If Zan plans to live in the "trnc" anytime soon before a settlement is reached, I'll suggest to him that he learns the Turkish accent before he moves to the "trnc", so that he will not be treated as a foreigner in his "own country of trnc" by the settlers from Turkey.!!
