President Mehmet Ali Talat said that they wanted to unite with the world by keeping what they had gained on 20th July and that the Turkish Cypriot People desired to take place among the respected peoples of the world and to have various contacts and communications with them.

Talat also expressed that they desired to have a respected and honourable solution with the Greek Cypriot people which they had to share this island.

Talat added: “Now is the time for a solution” and continued that their vision was a new partnership state bi-zonality and two politically equal people and equal status of the two founder states. Talat added that they shall never give up political equality and two equal states.

President Mehmet Ali talat expressed that the presence of Turkish army in Cyprus was not the cause but it was the result of the Cyprus problem therefore it was out of question to remove the result before the cause is removed.

Pointing out that the solution of the Cyprus problem was not going to be easy Talat called the Greek side to be in a more constructive attitude.

Christofias spoke on RIK last night and gave his vision of the new Cyprus that will emerge after solution. These are the main points of his interview.

1. A common federal state with a presidential system. There will be a President, a vice-President and a Ministers Council. The Greek Cypriot President will have a longer term in office than the Turkish Cypriot President. The central state will have a single sovereignty, a single nationality and a single international representation.

2. Political equality is an integral part of solution and what it means is effective participation of the two communities in the running of the federal state. What it boils down to is a "renewed" partnership with the Turkish Cypriots.

How can someone possibly want to keep what his side illegally "gained" on the 20th of July 1974, i.e. the usurping of the homeland, homes and properties of another 200,000 people, and at the same time wish his side "to take place among the respected peoples of the world," is truly beyond me to understand. Only a Turk may make such a claim, and place such a demand...

If he said the above, he has lost all credibility with the world, never mind joining them. What a farcical situation.

Never mind the dressing. How about quoting what these people say about the territory. Keeping his 1974 gains might be referring to the so called independence of the TCs etc. The territory is another whole deal by itself. Until someone talks about concrete and tangible things I am not listening.
