discussion of the difference between mainland turks and 'us'

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I would have absolutely no problem to be called just Cypriot IF I was truly and honestly considered as much of a Cypriot as a GC by your community. For years, we were called "Turkos" as if we were not part of Cyprus and now all of a sudden, you want us to forget that we are "Turkos" and just be Cypriots when your people still use the term "Cypriot" to mean "Greek Cypriot" and when I am still referred as "Turkos" in the south. Tell your people to redefine Cypriotness in their heads and then we'll talk.

How about looking at it this way

English have England
Scots, Scotland
Welsh, Wales

and they are all British.

In Cyprus no community owns exclusively any part. The whole part is owned by all Cypriots together.

Metecyp, you are the ones who define yourselves as Turkish Cypriots. Tourkos = Turkish in Greek. Is this offensive for you or what?

For example if here in Limassol we talk about some people living in Nicosia we call them "lefkosiates", not just Cypriots. Does this mean that people from Nicosia are not Cypriots?

I am sure that when you talk among yourselves you do not refer to us as just "Cypriots" right?

that is because cyprus either doesn’t come to terms with its own history, or its history legitimizes, only one ethnicity.

Britain is the result of tides of invaders, Romans, Vikings, Normans, Danes.

Please don’t quote me on this because im not sure but:
Many English are the result of Roman and Norman (French) invaders.
Welsh it is said are the original English who migrated during these invasions.
The Scotts are probably the result of pure scott, pre-roman English, and Viking/Danish invaders
Add to this differing religion, and cultures.

These three have their own places to live on one island without prejudices, and Scotland has its own laws, and has a say in making English law ( this does not make Scotts superior to English). Wales has its own language. All three have their own cultures, and all three have their own flags, yet they all live under one nation and one flag. We too are willing to live under the flag of Cyprus, but we still have our own cultures, needs, religion and language, which makes us different to you.

Metecyp,
You indeed have a serious psychological problem.
Do you define your identity and your nationality based on what you think the others perceive you to be? You do not have a will on your own? You do not know what you are? Why do you care what the others may think or say that you are?

Who cares what others believe or think you are? What matters, is what you accept that you are.

I am a Greek speaking CYPRIOT!
Are you a TURK, a TURKISHcypriot or a Turkish speaking CYPRIOT?
_____________________________________________
Cyprus is one and only one and indivisible. It belongs equally to all its people, the Cypriots. There is only one people in Cyprus, the Cypriots. Among others, there are Greek speaking Cypriots and Turkish speaking Cypriots. There is no Turkish and no Greek Cyprus. Those who do not feel Cypriots and instead they claim to be Greeks or Greekcypriots or Turks or Turkishcypriots can as well live the country because this country belongs only to the Cypriots.

Sure, nobody said you should change anything from what you are.

However, unlike the Scotish, you do not own a specfic part of Cyprus. So in this respect the Scotish and the TC cases are not similar.

The scots are not a nation, they are a community/race/tribe/people within a nation and as such they live in peace with their English cousins.

I tried to keep the analogy simple, but there is another state within Britain i.e Northern Ireland…..the result of two peoples following invasion and Scottish migrants which resulted in partition, but I tried to give an example of how two differing “tribes” live together on one small island, respecting each others differences.

If you put us back together again then based on our histories, and without giving blame to either side, we’ll probably have another Northern Ireland, (bombs, barricades. guns, and murder) and none of us want that.

What we have now isn’t great, but its better than Northern Ireland, surely?

Maybe it is better for you. I mean you are the 18% and you keep the 36%.
Peace is important, but there are other important things as well. If this is not the case, then why do countries have armies? Do you think there are many that would prefer to write off their land and become refugees rather than fight for what belongs to them?

The only way to achieve peace in the long run is to learn to live together with respect to human rights.

it is better for us, and safer for both of us.

i wont argue percentages with you, because i dont feel i fully understand that issue, and you may have a valid point, but i would like somewhere where both my and your people can at last, live in safety. This is paramount.

Metecyp,

Here's a question to all GC members of the forum. Please answer honestly.

One thing you cannot accuse me is that I was always honest. So here are my answers.

When you talk among yourselves and when you use the word "Cypriot", what does it usually mean?

Most of the times it means GCs. The same way that when you use it means TCs. When we talk about the Cyprus problem is means GCs and TCs.

Doesn't it usually mean Greek Cypriot?

Doesn’t it FOR YOU usually mean TC? When you go to your relatives in UK and they say "here came the Cypriots" do they by any chance include the GCs in their minds?

How do you refer to Turkish Cypriots?

TourkoKyprioi

Don't you usually refer to them as Turkos!?

NOOO! And this is true for 95% of the people

OK heres also a free answer for you:
How do we refer to the northern part of Cyprus?

Katehomena=occupied
