CHRISTOFIAS VISION OF NEW CYPRUS

CHRISTOFIAS VISION OF NEW CYPRUS

Postby Bananiot » Mon Jul 21, 2008 8:26 pm

President Christofias spoke on RIK last night and gave his vision of the new Cyprus that will emerge after solution. These are the main points of his interview.

1. A common federal state with a presidential system. There will be a President, a vice-President and a Ministers Council. The Greek Cypriot President will have a longer term in office than the Turkish Cypriot President. The central state will have a single sovereignty, a single nationality and a single international representation.

2. Political equality is an integral part of solution and what it means is effective participation of the two communities in the running of the federal state. What it boils down to is a "renewed" partnership with the Turkish Cypriots.

3. The component states should not be "nationally clean" so that as many refugees could return to areas that will not be handed over to the Greek Cypriots. The component states will have equal rights which will not stand above the constitution of the common state.

4. The economy will be unified.

5. Christofias will do battle, he said, on the negotiation table, to achieve demilitarisation of the island, the abolition of guarantee rights, the drastic reduction to the numbers of settler and the restoration of the right to return and to property.

He also pointed out that in the past the leadership (especially the Greek Cypriot one) did not try to explain to the people what the federal model is all about. He accused the super patriots of being responsible for our weakness to find a solution till today. He was confident, he said, that the national council will support his endeavours and that he will only back down if the national council unanimously told him to do so.

I think that come July 25, Christofias and Talat will make a joint statement which will read something like this:

The leaders of the two communities have agreed that enough progress has been achieved in the technical committees and working groups for negotiations to begin aiming at a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

Let us keep our fingers crossed the two men succeed and come to a solution as soon as possible. Talat and Christofias can solve the problem because both are warm supporters of solution and both together can corner the rejectionists in both communities that have afflicted so much misery and pain to Cyprus.[/list]

Have you heard what the other side said? Our politics have said many things for 34 years...what happened? Nothing. Not only our side need to be willing but both sides. I watch on the news what Talat and Erdogan said and I totally freaked out.

By the way, I dont want to sound pessimistic but all the above sound too sweet to my ears. Kind of what we expected to hear and lots of generalized words. I apologize if it was not like that. I did not know about that program.

I have heard what the other side has said but you must take into account the circumstances under which thise statements were made. The real talking will be done during the face to face negotiations.

You must be kidding me ... so under the circumstances you tell them yes you can F* me with words that are said in frond of media from all over the world but when we come to face to face negotiation be nice to us?

I am sorry for my language but its all bullshit. They said they will not give back what they took...that they dont want equal status... they want the "Turkish guarantorship" on the island and lots of other b* that can make your hair stand up.

I think Sunday may be good Miltiades. What time will you be in Nicosia?
Lena, our only option is to go for talks. Those that do not like talks, normally find a more "diplomatic" way to put, than you. They say that the talks must be thoroughly prepared first, so that there will be a good chance for success.

None of those 5 points are accepted by the Turks. So where is the enough progress you talk about? That is like 0 out of 5 agreement. Zero progress. You are living in a dream if you think Talat will do anything else than what they tell him from Ankara. He says what they tell him to say from Ankara now and he will say the same shit in the future. The missery and pain in Cyprus is due to the Turkish expansionism against our island. What missery did I cause to you because I rejected to accept that half of my country to be given to the Turks? You must be kidding us!

Monday is even better Miltiades.
We shall see Sotos, however, if you think that only the Turks are to be blamed for our misfortunes then I am afraid it is you who is living in a dream world.
