Turkish Prime-Minister Erdoğan was reported to have said while opening a technology park on the first day of his visit:

http://www.yeniduzengazetesi.com/templa ... 8&zoneid=3

“Ama bunun sonunda ister istemez inanıyorum Kıbrıs Türk devleti kesinlikle kurulacaktır. Siyasi eşitlik olacak, Kıbrıs Türk devleti olacak, adil kapsamlı bir netice çıkacak. Ve bu kalıcı olacak, öyle geçici değil. Şu andaki Türkiye iktidarının bunun dışındaki bir şeye evet demesi mümkün değil.”

"But at the end of all this I believe whether we like it or not that a Cyprus Turkish state will be founded. There will be political equality, there will be a Cyprus Turkish state, a just and comprehensive result will emerge. And this will be permanent, not some kind of temporary measure. It is impossible for the current Turkish leadership to approve anything apart from this."

This talk of a Cyprus Turkish state is a bit worrying now that Talat and Christofias have agreed to the principle of single sovereignty. I was hoping for some kind of good-will gesture from Erdoğan during this visit. Instead, he seems to be throwing a spanner in the works.

PS: Zan, how is TPap still keeping you out?

Talat made a mistake and or was misunderstood....Simple as that. He cannot gift the island to the illegal regime of the "RoC". We are after a fair deal in which our rights are guaranteed. Talat was elected to protect those rights not sign them away. Humanist is right in that we are not in the market for oppression in our own country.

As for Tpap........He has been active in trying to destroy us in any way possible since the 50s and is still there doing his dirty work with the rest of the EOKA henchmen. If you believe that he isn't then you are easily fooled.

I believe that both the EOKA henchmen and the TMT thugs are waiting in the wings praying that the present negotiations fail. However, the left is in office in both commnities just now, and I believe that peace has a chance. Maybe I am naive -perhaps this is because I have only been in Cyprus for four years. Time will tell.

We have had peace since 1974 Tim, unification has a chance but only if Tpap and the other ruling elite have a massive change of heart which I doubt very much.

To my mind it was a strange kind of peace where both communiies were staring across the divide at each other with emnity - a state of affairs that led to tragic events like the summary extrajudicial killing of a youth who was trying to rip down a flag.

Are you suggesting that AKEL and Christofias are actually just puppets in the hands of some shadowy ruling elite who have a very different agenda from the platform on which the Communists were elected?

Then you believe in a fantasy as far as EOKA are concerned.

What are they organised to carry out these days?

Draw the chairs for Cyprus and Greece closer together at EU meetings?

Peace is not people throwing rose petals into the water and having the sun shining at a perfect temperature all the time Tim. Peace has to maintained under pressure and whilst a few people got tragically killed and an entire nation of people were being held under siege for decades, we had no massive wars in which thousands were killed. I would welcome that peace considering the circumstances.

And, as for Christifias being a puppet...You betcha. I predicted the result and the way in which the election would be lost for Tpap and I was right. We had the fake illness of Tpap and then the dramatic loss to a guy who was his supporter in other election results. Time to pay the piper and try to fool the world yet again. Can you not feel the pressure on who will flinch first and be blamed for the breakdown of talks......Talat and Turkey are much wiser through the events of yesteryear my friend. If you think that this cruel game of trying to make the people of Cyprus believe that there will be a fair settlement is true then I am even more saddened and angered by Christifias' trickery. They think that Turkey will give in to every one of their demands because of their EU expectations but there is another element in this and they are the TCs. We are fed up with being pushed around and being ignored by the very people that want us to join them. We are waking up and demanding our rights Tim.
