Oracle I am no expert in medieval history. however a few years ago I was helping a local farmer to dig a drainage ditch in a field and we uncovered numerous blocks of stone. The stones were rectangular in form and some were chiseled out in the form of a square. When we asked the local history society they said that the stones were Medieval and the stones which were mortised out would be to take the timber uprights of the building. Local records did not show of any building in that field and so it remains a mytery of how they came to be there.

Hello again Lucky Jim

Are you perchance in the West Country area .. :?

I have helped with a number of archaeological digs there and you sound "in the know ". 8)

Farmland seems to be particularly rewarding in past histories in the UK and I am constantly delighted by the generosity exhibited by these farmers whose livelihood would otherwise depend on undisturbed cultivation of cowing etc.

History before agriculture I say .....
