To be honest, i'm not sure! I must confess to not being the most technically savvy person

No 3G is a bit ridiculous and annoying as I have noticed on both mine and my wifes SIM they are 128k 3G SIM's.

I just bought her a Samsung F480 - TOCCO mobile which is 3G and occasionally the 3G logo appears on the screen. Does that mean it has a 3G SIM card but not necessarily 3G avaiable on the network?

hmm...to be fare i have no idea about the 3g logo thing :/ so don't know what to say to you there...go to a retailer and ask them...Germanos would be more than happy to help you out :)

however, (don't know if this is useful info for you) but a friend told me today that there is 3G network in central areas of cyprus (ie, finikoudes, nicosia high street etc.) i doubted it...but ok...maybe he ment if your with MTN...? who knows :P

there is an unlock...iv seen it available at iPelagos and Technica...they have both been unlocked and will work for our sim cards...(at a price of 800 euro for the 8GB only!!)

what i want to know is what features can we use in cyprus for the iPhone 3G?
ie. can we even use '3G'?
what is 'EDGE'?...
and what about GPS will that work?..:S

800 euro for 8GB.. bit to much.. you should wait and buy the 16gb

I tend to agree that it won't be OFFICIALLY released as we tend to miss things like this being 'Little old Cyprus' :-(

I did speak to a guy in Marangos in Paphos and he said mid - end Aug but was a bit cagey on the whole OFFICIAL bit so I suspect they will be unlocked.

My only worry is as I said in my post that updating the software in the phone will cause it to lock again and I have heard reports that it will/may cause it to lock permanently (Or until a NEW unlock comes out for that particular problem - if yiou see what I mean...)

I wonder what we would be told at the time of buying it and if not warned, what would our rights/comeback be?

Also, I heard that French sourced phones HAVE to be sold by law in both locked AND unlocked form due to French law.

That could be another possibility?

Supertrotter,
yea i know exactly what you mean, but i dont think it will lock if you update the softwear.
what i know is, if you jailbreak it, then you actualy cant update it, coz that will cause you to lose everything thats on it.

btw, i discoverd today that the price will be around 600 euro. (an insider from accapella told me) i think if baught from a retailer then fingers crossed we will be able to update with no problems. :)

BTW!!...a quick Q. will the Apps work in Cyprus? for example:
-Movie App: does that work only in countries that have a registerd iPhone
-Midomi: will that work through a wifi connection? (seeing as we don't have 3G available in Cyp)

..

by the way i have a 16GB iphone and when new software is available if you do not have the iphone LEGIT and you unlock it with a program such as winpwn pwnage or iliberty, ziphone

then when you update the software the phone locks and you have to unlock and jailbreak with the software..

the only unlock available on the 3G iphone at the moment is if you use turbo sim.. and when you use turbo sim you have to cut your sim card to use it.. not something i would want to do..

THERE IS NO UNLOCK PROGRAM THAT WORKS WITH 3G...
just jailbreak. saying that, there will be a program soon enough that unlocks the 3g iphone.

i have 1.1.4 firmware on my phone there is 2.0 now but when you upgrade you backup everything on itunes upgrade and put all the settings how they where before so you dont really lose anything but you do have to unlock it again..

the iphone is great but it lacks many things a phone SHOULD have... like the bluetooth does not work to send and recieve files... you cannot take a video with the camera on the phone... but when you jailbreak it you can add all these applications, apart form bluetooth that wont work no matter what u do..

and jailbreaking while its good once you jailbreak and unlock apple refuse to help if you have any problems with the telephone so you have to use forums and other ways if you ever have a problem..

plus for me because iphone is not officially released in cy, i had to save pohone numbers twice once with the +357 and once without so it would show names when they ring and text. until i found a patch.

although i wouldent take it back its still a very good phone.

Your right it does lock up again but what you do is untick auto check for updates in itunes and just dont update the iphone until there is a unlock available at the moment there is a unlock for 2.0 which is the latest software and jailbreak but for the 1st generation iphones the 3g you have to use turbo sim ^^...

i have a 16gb 1st gen iphone and i am waiting to upgrade using winpwn.. this i found is a good program you can change the start up logo and add many things which apple call "illigel" but it makes using the iphone that much better with some of the apps that our out there espesially when you can connect to your iphone using ssh and change/add files

there is a website hackingt0sh they are the team working on a unlock for the 3g. and in installer there is greek project.

hopefully one day apple will stop locking phones .. but there will always be an unlock while they keep the phones locked.

http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/index.phpthat forum has all the info on iphones when there is unlock on new updates and how to install them without having problems..

it is NOT just when you jailbreak you can unlock your iphone only no jailbreak then when you upgrade the phone re-locks until apple decide to stop locking phones

oh cool..thats for that...really handy.
Well another Q. i hope you can answer.
iv already downloaded about 45 Apps.
So what should i get..8GB or 16GB?
i'll only put about 300-400 songs, and maybe 1-2 videos.
plus..I dont mind only having about 30-40 Apps.

so what do you think? is 8GB enough?

personally i would go with the 16GB kypraia because you will eventually add more and more you will see an app or a movie or even a song you want to add to your iphone and the Gb's will slowly add up.

If you jailbreak your iphone you can then through installer download and install apps/games/bug fixes i dident think i would want any apps but i filled up with them espesially with summerboard you can add some nice themes.

with the iphone you have the wifi connection so you can connect to the internet wherever there is wireless which is very good you dont have to pay so easy or mtn to connect to the internet, which apps did you download?:)

also the iphone is partitioned into two parts so the actual size of the iphone will be less so they leave space for the actual operating system so the 8GB will have maybe 7GB of actual space after the os..

Imo you should go with the 16GB:)
