I used the first iPhone for a while but I stupidly chose to listen to everyone else and wait for the Nokia N96 instead of getting the 3G version of the iPhone.
Waited all this time for it and finally got the N96 last week. And let me tell you, it's a DISASTER of a phone.
The firmware has so many bugs, the Wlan doesn't work, the youtube application is garbage. It buffers every few seconds and the quality of the videos leaves a lot to be desired. Everything about the phone is crap imo. It's not much different from the N95 really...that was quite a good phone but you'd expect something BETTER from the newer version. It has a TV receiver on it but theres no one providing that service in the UK so thats pretty useless. Plus what makes everything so much worse is how laggy the phone is.
I prefer the iPhone with it's shortcomings anyday...at least it runs smoothly and it's much more reliable than any other phone I've ever used.

I also had the 1st gen iPhone and I know what you mean about the bugs, but the N96 is nothing like I've ever experienced before. Forget the firmware, it seems that it was the phone itself that was rushed. Thats not suprising since theres a lot of new phones coming out that are going to leave it in the dark. Nokia probably thought we either release it as it is or we lose out altogether. Sonys Experia X1 is coming out this week, and once it does I doubt anyone will look twice at the N96. I thought about waiting for that but from all the reviews I've read, people are also talking about it lagging constantly...you can even see it for yourself in the demos on youtube. Plus it runs on WINDOWS, so no thank you!
The iPhone is the best choice without a doubt, for me anyways. I think they're more reliable than the other phones I've used. I regretted getting rid of the 1st one I had, and I should of stuck to my instincts and not listened to the iPhone haters! It may not be great but I'd rather have a shitty camera on a phone than a shitty phone on a camera....
Anyways I've just got home from work with it. Can't wait to get it fired up!!!!
