We tried and gave up after a day or two, there was no 3G symbol to appear on the screen.
Finally I went to a Cyta store where they told me that I have to get a new 3G data/phone SIM and that they have to programme the system so that card will work in data mode.
Remember now follow..
If u will successfully make your regular SIM to convert to 3G SIM will it cost u 10 times more in data traffic until you make an agreement/plan with Cyta where u tell them if u like 1/2/5/10 GB of data per month! But they can only start from 1st of next coming month to use that plan lol.
Before u have the payment plan in order are u paying 10 times the traffic tariff on data.
OK so at least do I surf on 3G speed but as I mention before be careful.

thnx for the information, all you have to do is use the wifi where there is a connection?
anyway how are you finding the 3g? i have the 1st generation iphone and am very happy with it, might upgrade to 3g when there is a unlock program for it...
i was hopng for the front camera for video callsa dn few extras that the iphone still lacks even with 3g... did you get black/white 8/16GB?:)
