What have YOU done for Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

What have YOU done for Cyprus

Postby Jerry » Sun Jul 20, 2008 11:48 am

President Kennedy made his famous speech in 1961 "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."

With this in mind and on the 34th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus - what have YOU done to help achieve a just solution to the Cyprus Problem. Sounding off on this site against the "other side" does not count.

This is a naive question which could turn out to produce a lot of positive ideas. But you don't need comparisons to JFK to justify it, as it is conceptually, completely different. Frankly an insult to JFK's positively-affirming sentiment.

Surely everybody has played some part as proof things are no worse than they are. And everyone could have done more, and perhaps things would have been better. So what?

Do you really think those that have carried out major changes are going to own up and reveal their true identities?..... or are you asking for some made-up stuff? :?

Personally speaking, as one who has done absolutely nothing, other than financially reward the US and UK (therefore negative), for me what matters is exactly what JFK said

Ask what you can do for your country.

JFK struck home, and I would like to seek out what we can do for our country to solve the problem, since that is my present interest.

For me the solution lies in the future, not the past.

So what do we need to do?

Sweetie ... actually I am. :(

If the President and the EU said no more talk; I would want to be prepared to be useful.

So how do we prepare for that day, when we can do our bit? :?

The first step is to volunteer to your local "Civil Defence" Office! http://www.moi.gov.cy/moi/cd/cd.nsf/dmlindex_gr/dmlindex_gr?opendocument It is open for Cypriot citizens (men/women) who haven't completed a compulsory military service. :D

Thank you for your critique of my naive question Oracle. The Cyprus Problem is as important to me as what you describe as JFK's positively affirming sentiment, so I don't feel he has been insulted.

The question was linked to the past because today is the anniversary of an event that had a profound affect on the people of Cyprus. I had hoped that we would hear how Cypriots had taken part in demonstrations, marches, written to politicians, joined lobby groups and raised funds for Cypriot causes etc. Examples of past endeavours could set an example to others to become more active in future in seeking justice for Cyprus instead of confining their efforts to point scoring on this forum.

Incidentally, Kurupetos, the caption, assuming it's a piss take of Kitchener, should read - "Your Country Needs You"

Yes I went on most of the marches when I lived in London.

I organised exhibitions at major British Universities with material generously donated to me by the embassy / consulate.

I got into a fight with a halil type propagandist (I lost, revenge still pending).

And that's all I want to reveal. Jerry you are not going to get anything more meaningful than that from people.

As I said I would rather have ideas for future progress.
