At the risk of being accused of cutting and pasting i have attached the following article from Todays Zaman newspaper regarding water, it appears that North Cyprus and turkey have already offerred Sth Cyprus water that is being shipped from Turkey to the north, in addition to the water that will be available once the pipeline id complete in 3 to 4 years. No official answer yet from Sth Cyprus.... Its also good to see Turkey making a genuine offer to help GC's with no pre-conditions unlike GC's which have attempted to gain leverage from Turkey's EU bid at every opportunity!!!

Turkey stands by offer to give Greek Cypriots water

Turkey's offer to provide drinking water to Greek Cypriots on ethnically divided Cyprus still stands, even though it has been publicly rejected, the Turkish Cypriot leader has said.

Mehmet Ali Talat said on Saturday that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, "made it very clear that Turkey is ready to help" to alleviate a water crisis lashing the island. Talat told a news conference with Erdoğan in the Turkish Cypriot capital of Lefkoşa that he has made the water offer to Greek Cypriot officials "on different channels." He said although they have publicly spurned the offer, "no official answer" has yet been given.

The Turkish Cypriot leader said water tankers making the 75-kilometer trip from Turkey to the Turkish Cypriot north would be shared with Greek Cypriots in the south if they accept the offer.

Greek Cypriot government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou has said water diplomacy is not possible as long as the Cyprus issue remains unresolved. A rainless winter has seen reservoirs dwindle to crisis levels, forcing the government to ration water to Greek Cypriot households and import quantities from Greece aboard tankers.

Erdoğan said work to build an undersea water pipeline linking Turkey to the north of the island would begin in 2009 and be completed within three years. The pipeline will carry 75 million cubic meters of water annually. The project is expected to cost $300 million. Lefkoşa AP with Today's Zaman

A desalination plant is the best way to go, you will always have a supply of water without having to rely on anyone.
governements are idiots they never think about the bigger picture.

Here in Australaia we have the worst droughts ever , river are dying and have been reduced to small creeks and ponds, forests are dying and reservoirs are sepleting.
The governments are a bunch of wankers who are using billions of our dollars on stupid crap, insead of creating new ways of capturing and desalinating water from the sea to supply us. instead they just want us to use less water but it hasnt rained here properly to fill up dams sowhere will the water come from?

useless bunch of idiots.

They have no choice what so ever but to reject the offer. Any good will towards anything Turkish is still seen to be hostile to the voters which gives you an indication of how serious the matter is. When completed, I am sure that necessity will outstrip the prejudice.
