Cyprus File

Postby RichardB » Thu Jul 17, 2008 9:11 pm

Not sure if this is in the right section

I've just come across this news item from todays Cyprus Mail

I have not heard of this commitee before

Could someone shed light on the reasons for it

This is a serious question

Papadopoulos makes ‘important’ revelations to Cyprus File committee

FORMER President Tassos Papadopoulos revealed important new evidence during the last part of his testimony to the Committee on the Cyprus File yesterday.

Chairman of the Committee for the Cyprus File and EDEK Deputy Marinos Sizopoulos said yesterday that the former President’s testimony revealed new facts that were classed as very important.

“I have to admit that Tassos Papadopoulos mentioned facts and incidents that are regarded as particularly significant and had not come to the attention of the Committee before this. These facts will be cross-checked with other information and documents and we believe will constitute important material for historians that will look into the Cyprus File in the future,” he said.

Papadopoulos’ testimony centred on events that took place in Cyprus between the years 1971 and 1974 and included evidence on the coup, the Turkish invasion and the return of Archbishop Makarios III to Cyprus.

Yesterday’s witness statement by the former President was the second time he had given evidence to the Committee for the Cyprus File as he had previously provided information regarding events that took place in the years 1967-71.

The Committee for the Cyprus File, which convenes behind closed doors, has been collecting testimonies and documents in a bid to clarify the exact events that took place leading up to the Turkish invasion.

Among the high profile names that have already appeared before the Committee include former President Glafcos Clerides as well as EDEK honorary Chairman Vassos Lyssarides.

Sizopoulos said that yesterday’s evidence officially concluded Papadopoulos’ testimony, though he could be called before the Committee again if its members felt that further clarification was needed on the evidence that he has already submitted.

This has been going on for years (many of them).

I don't think anyone is expecting any results from them.

It is supposedly going to explain the who, why and when of the coup and subsequent events.

This is the first time for ages that it has re-emerged in the press.

This is obviously highly topical ..... It is rather important work to gather all the facts together in the Cyprus File before too many witnesses have passed on etc. and whilst matters are easier to verify.

So O do you not think its co-incidence that this article has been published at this time- i mean to coincide with the events of 34 years ago.

Do they have a similar commitee in the north do you know?

I wonder what the Grim Reaper would have to say about all this. I cant wait for the 'Cyprus File' to be published - if at all.

I don't know of a similar committee in the north, but if they were supposedly collecting data there, I would not trust it, as the people are under occupation by a foreign army, and their statements would be suspect at the very least!

BTW ... no not co-incidence IMO ... unlikely!

It would be very interesting if it ever were published but more often than not governments will just keep reclassifying document so they will not be released (AKA Kennedy assasiation.)

The events it cover Include the Turkish invasion and the return of President Makarios So obviously this period conerns the Northern side also

Do you know if there is an equivalent comittee in the North?
