Eventually the forum starts to get flooded with people who cannot debate a simple point without dragging ten quotes behind them of:
"Look at me, I have nothing to say so I will misquote you until you have to correct me and then I know I have your attention"
People who seem unable to think beyond their
own front door or beyond forum politics.
A consequence of expecting a gem of an answer to a question /paradox/topic, for those who relish new ideas from wherever they arise, to indicate a glimmer of hope that you've found another forumer who doesn't need electric convulsive therapy after every thought ...... is you invariably get dragged in.
Banter, witticisms are fine; odd exchange of weather comments to seal familiarity all fine ... but not when that is all that is on offer.
Some people take a simple response, as an invitation to continue in similar kind, endlessly, unable to take the hints of moving on back to debates.
People have given up thinking.
More people work from home, so the forum is a good filler-in, since the PCs usually have to stay on.
Some people are house-bound completely, in wheelchairs perhaps, or nursing other members of the family ... whatever their reason it is
no longer good manners to insult somebody by how long they choose to spend on the forum or their motives.
Obsession with other's personal / drinking / medication habits is bad form too.
Some feel the need to use one "argument" to fit all categories and topics.
Their one piece of "sound advice" is brandished about like a torturous mantra.
We've lost some major debaters, out-of-box thinkers recently, Greekforumer, AlexISS and GR! etc. .... so we are all suffering as we realise how subtly they managed to "cut-the-crap" and yet still offer an argument.
There are all sorts. That is fine, preferable even. But balance between banter and debate has to be tweaked every so often.
