Nikitas wrote:This prika thing was a loooong time ago. Last time I saw a prika deal was in the late 50s, I was in primary school but recall the party and the feast pretty well for other reasons. The process was called prikosymfono, or dowry contract and the priest was also involved. It was signed and sealed and involved the giving of fields etc.

From then on I have heard of parents giving the couple money and or property to help them out but the property stays in the child's name, whereas true prika goes to the groom.

As for guys trying to marry rich girls, well that is hardly a Cypriot thing nor is it just men that do it. The term gold digger comes to mind and it usually involves ladies, or am I wrong?

Yep I think so. In Cyprus it's the men who do the gold diging.

As you said "In the past, TC and Turkish mothers would start gathering things for their very young daughters at the early age, to be given to them when they got married 15-20 years later. They would gather or make themselves, from embroidered bed and pillow covers, to bed covers, to buying pots and pans, and stored them in a big chest."...that happens as well with some families nowadays as well....my mum made sure that when I move to my house I will have from crystal classes to bed sheets...

Do i see the sign of the EURO in your eyes?? All that and the house belong to me and not my future husband. He will have the pleasure to use them but not own them...:)

By the way even though you say that this things belong to 1950s...a friend of mine who has a good job and own a half build house he is looking for someone who owns something...a house, land or her parents have money. He doesnt demand all that but he would love to feel the joy of spending or invest them as he said. Also many of my friends (female) told me that their parents have done the same as mine did. Parents want the best of their children and of course they dont want them to suffer or straggle when they will have their own families.

Words of wisdom.

I think parents should let their young struggle a bit so they value whats given (later) more.

"Oh, I have it made, who wants to work" and " My wife will look after me, because I love her". Yeh, right, 'what are you doing in the strip club then?'Come on girls wake up.

I am not looking for number four btw. 8)

I am talking to myself again. I need a brake.

Don't think like that. There are some good people around.

Its not quite like that Deniz. Nobody stop working and wait from the wife or her parents. Its just that a house save money and make life easier for the couple.

just thinking of other compound words with the suffix "thiras" which comes from "thira" ie hunting.

lathrothiras- poacher
falainothiras- whaler
lykothiras- wolf hound

Seems that it involves skill and cunning, so it shows some initiative. Always looking for a positive aspect in everything!
