You do what you can for the kids, if the parents are well off then the kids get helped more. I have not heard of any cases where actual demands are made, more of an expectation that the woman would have something, but if you have nothing to give then that cannot be helped either.

Tell me one person who wouldn't accept some assistance through a marriage and I'll show you a liar.

Anyway, unless the dauther in the case you refer to above sega was some ugly old M******F******* then maybe he was right to ask for something

No seriously, those days have gone, you take her as she comes or not at all in my books.

good luck sega, don't be getting any funny ideas now

Re, im not that ugly, maybe a little, but I have morals.

I have discussed to many about this topic, and all the guys say to me, "does she have a house", "what her family's finacial status", and all that bullhocky. Most men think like that, which is sad. It's absolute crap. To add insult to injury if you marry a woman just because of the money, then what are the chances of actually loving her, emm.... maybe just her money.

What about all those women that marry men purely for their money?

@ Deniz & Pantheman

You will be surprise how many men nowadays who are still single at the age of 28-36 look for some money, a house or land that they can sell or ask for a loan etc. Its not so common between the younger one but older one with an "ok" job not the best one they do expect for something. But as Pantheman said they do not demand anything just expect.

This prika thing was a loooong time ago. Last time I saw a prika deal was in the late 50s, I was in primary school but recall the party and the feast pretty well for other reasons. The process was called prikosymfono, or dowry contract and the priest was also involved. It was signed and sealed and involved the giving of fields etc.

From then on I have heard of parents giving the couple money and or property to help them out but the property stays in the child's name, whereas true prika goes to the groom.

As for guys trying to marry rich girls, well that is hardly a Cypriot thing nor is it just men that do it. The term gold digger comes to mind and it usually involves ladies, or am I wrong?

Poor Deniz.!!

Deniz, had you married a GC girls 3 times, you would have had 3 houses by now, and all in your own name.!

I believe the idea of "buying off" the groom to be, by the bride's family was in the hopes that the husband to be, will be kind to their daughter during their marriage, so that he would not be abusive or run around with other women. In another words, not only the parents gave their daughter away to these men, but they also paid cash on top of it. That must have made the girl feel "special", that the parents couldn't even give her away for "free" but they had to pay someone to take her off their hands.!!

In the past, TC and Turkish mothers would start gathering things for their very young daughters at the early age, to be given to them when they got married 15-20 years later. They would gather or make themselves, from embroidered bed and pillow covers, to bed covers, to buying pots and pans, and stored them in a big chest.

Thanks God for IKEA these days, to get all this stuff.!
