Sick, deranged killers or genuine do-gooders

What kind of person would volunteer and make a career of being a killing-machine  ..... I mean soldier? :D

I thought I was the one "Winding up the world" Oracle?

I can understand intelligent people in the UK considering the military as a career as there are good opportunities to learn a trade, but think it is probably the disadvantaged (family, money, education) that join as "squaddies" as there is very little alternative.

I don't wish to offend anyone with this, but that is how I see it.

I am curious about the nature / psyche of the average career-killer ... I mean career-soldier! :D

No you are not Phoenix, you are on the long and wind up road again. To answer the question, it takes all sorts, from school leavers to Uni grads, most proffesions are found within the armed services.
The Armed forces of every country is a heddy mix of all sorts from every walk of life....

Persons like myself

A young lad who spent his childhood reading and digesting the world atlas

But coming from a council estate and only a single parent to bring them up (my father died when i was 4 YO)

The only possible way I could travel abroad and see these countries and taste the culture was to join the forces no way could I have travelled the world in any other way.

The rest of the job comes with the 'signature on the line'

O not all squaddies are thick - instantly obeying all orders types. Some of us had/have brains and are free thinking individuals who learn from their experiences and form their own opinions

Learn a trade ? :? ... well that sounds like a euphemism to me.

I can understand some may join to get off the streets ... but are they really the sort of people we want to be spending our taxes training to kill our fellow man?
