What kind of person would volunteer and make a career of being a killing-machine
..... I mean soldier?
I volunteered.
I did not noticed any individual that is a deranged psycho. Australian Armed Forces have a tendency to weed out any unstable persons.
But as Richard said, you may be talking metaphorically. Australian soldiers are not deranged killers. But I guess you may wish to debate that since our involvement in numerous conflicts in the last few years.
In Australia, defence is considered an extremely excellent and fulfilling career. There is a sense of pride in serving the military. It is not always about fighting a war, the military is also responsible for many things, including UN peace keeping roles, and humanitarian relief. The bottom line is, you are trained to serve your country, defend it and it's interests, no matter what this may entail. The politicians make the decisions, so your argument may be more applicable to them.
I guess the thing that made me join more than anything else, was my life time interest in aircraft and aviation. Why drive a normal car when you can drive a Ferrari (I hope you can understand the analogy here)!
OH and BTW, out of 11 years of service, I think I collectively only spent about 4 or so weeks in a sleeping bag. Grunts spend a lot more time in a sleeping bag.
